If someone is going to waste approx. 15 minutes to go through creating a new character on my server just to QQ/rant at me, then let them. I'll black list them. No skin off my nose.
Or you know, they could display names and then not show servers. *gasp*

Not showing servers isnt going to help much. Just go to lodestone and type in your name. Will show any character with the same name and what server they are on...
Very disappointing and impersonal. I was looking for pvp in this game, and now not so much. I don't see a reason participating in pvp rather then in pve, because opponents are npcs either way. That's right, how can I consider my opponents humans, if they are all the same, no names, no reputation, nothing. No emotions after I beat opponent I struggled with, new friendships, rivalries and what not. MMO is supposed to be about social interections, and pvp is actually all about them. Very disappointed.
Would prefer to have option to un-hide my name, as was mentioned previously in this thread.
Pretty much. Killing without emotions.
Absolutely. Wonder why this isn't a more popular opinion. Oh wait -- its because the people who don't like this announcement only care about griefing and abuse, they really don't care about competition.Removing character names makes it as competitive as possible. You're not focused on killing the guy with the dumb name, or taking down the guy from the RP server, or avoiding the internet-famous streamer; you've just got 8 opponents in front of you to take down efficiently.

Is this a joke? Things that make PvP competitive are proper matchmaking, ratings / leagues, regularly balanced, etc... all things MMORPGs tend to fail badly on, where as games that actually are competitive like SC2, CS, DOTA2, etc don't hide players names, because guess what, is adds nothing, if anything it makes things less competitive on a personal or team level as losing or winning against some anonymous opponent / team has less meaning or impact.Removing character names makes it as competitive as possible.
