The responses to this thread illustrate exactly why SE has to go this far to put some sort of cap on the egotistical BS that surrounds PVP. If you want to be e-famous, get a tumblr and start posting out-of-focus hipster photographs of abandoned buildings.

Your logic is flawless. We should all hide our fake names behind generic fake names so that we can avoid meeting other players in a multiplayer game, because we could all be hipsters and be photographers?

*quietly rolls a new character named "Fresh Meat*

"I know it does, I've seen it. That's why the rest of me is just going to enjoy the show because we already know that I'm the one that beats you."

    Problem solved, you're all welcome!

Though really, if it were optional to show or hide you name, it'd be great. Sometimes it's nice to be anonymous, like when you're just learning (or don't want to be bothered); and sometimes you want to be known, like when you're getting to be good and maybe want to make a name for yourself, so to speak.

Also, I have some concerns about the anonymity - visions of afkers in WoW battlegrounds come to mind, but now people will be yelling to "report Fresh Meat afk"... but maybe this won't be an issue, depending how pvp works in FFXIV.

And your ability to be obtuse is flawless as well. If your idea of "meeting other players in a multiplayer game" equates to being able to see that you killed "Mylittle Pwny," then you're just further illustrating SE's policy on this.

If you want games where everything can be steamrolled and you can't offend anyone or kill them, here: https://www.wizard101.com/, http://www.monkeyquest.com/en/index
... Please let the grown-ups handle FFXIV.

I could care less if I can see who I'm killing, just saying if I want other players to see who I am, who is that hurting? If it happens that I can see someone on the opposing team, and they're a good player, why should I not be able to friend them..? This isn't a faction game, we could always team up for the next round, or even invite them to FC or endgame..

    EDIT:

I don't know that the /tell thing has ever been attributed to harassment prevention, but even if it has, it's most likely a cover for a technical inability. Since duty finder servers combine multiple servers, and you're partying with John Deere, how would the game know whether or not to /tell the one in the dungeon with you, or the one on your home server?

Sorry, kind off-topiic, and I agree that this one in particular is indeed too far.

You're failing to understand the point of this proposed policy, and also failing to act like an adult while you claim to be one of the "grown ups." You're completely blind to the useless vitriol rampant in PVP circles. This is coming from someone who enjoys PVP immensely.

I don't think I'm "completely blind"--I've never tried to deny that contention will arise in PvP. My point is that it's not necessarily bad. Of course there will be jerks that go too far, and I don't mind if chat is disabled during PvP. But I want to know who I'm fighting. Like XI, I want to be able to finish PvP with "GG, {Team up?}" Like WoW--or really any MMO I've PvP'd in--I want to be able to say, "!"£%^*$. It's that guy!"

I feel like the anonymity causes greater losses than gains.

EDIT: Also, in case you came in late, my idea was NOT to force everyone to reveal their names, just to offer an option for a player to show his/her name to everyone.

Now that's a more coherent argument. Your previous responses have consisted of (and the majority of others against this), "If you like this policy you're a baby who should go play a baby game! You big care bear baby!" For many this type of behavior is their first response, which again, illustrates SE's point. Because while I, and most others, aren't offended by name calling, some game companies just don't want to invite the type of player who spouts verbal diarrhea. That's perfectly acceptable since PVP isn't going to be the focus of this game.

We also have to be aware that this is a Japanese company, and their gaming culture is different than ours. This policy is far less jarring to a culture that focuses on the team rather than the individual.
