I can understand that Square Enix didn't want to make a direct sequel to an MMO, equally they have to consider that FFXI at prime had a 500,000 strong user base for a reason. They didn't lend, borrow and change any of their past "good working" systems.. And that is what is responsible solely for the failure of the game IMO.

The Battle System is one of them.. Apparently the new system is being announced.. I'd bet a lot of things that the remodeled system is going to be very reminiscent of Final Fantasy XI.. Why? Because it WORKS.

Auction House, Mog House, Chocobo, Airship, Delivery Box. These are things you will come soon as this game progressively becomes FFXI-2. Why? Because they work.

The battle system is fine, the time consumption was a little too much for many though. Job balance was an issue during certain points but the battle system itself is solid.

best parts were the story, adventure an exciting world, later on many game modes. But battle itself? it was nothing special. it wasnt kill yourself, i hate this battle, but i dont think anyone would claim battle in ffxi was extremely exciting or particularly fun or cool.

I thought the most common complaint was that it took too long to do certain things?

leveling in RO was way slower than FFXI, and it had a fairly large and long lasting market, with a fairly small company, and fairly long development cycles. PSO probably took just as long to get to max level, PSU as well, uhhhh what other mmos.... never played wow. But i would say FFXI wasnt really that long in terms of hours of leveling.
It did however force people into very fixed roles, and people were unable to operate effectively without certain job set ups. So maybe in that respect, time doing nothing was a factor, but many people found ffxi battle system fairly boring, most people just wanted to tear through it to get on to fun things like missions, getting gear, being leet. Final fantasy was one of the systems where you leveled up so you could do cool stuff, not because the actual battle was entertaining.

Imo, battle in aion, and even RO (high level) was more entertaining than ffxi, ffxi strength was mostly the world, lots to do, and goals that you wanted to achieve, the battle was just what you had to do on the way, the only entertaining thing about the battle for most people became competing in parses.
