Actually it was much faster in the beta to the point people petitioned to have it reduced. And they did. You leveled ridiculously quickly through gathering jobs (well, maybe not so much fisher) with the exp you got plus Guildleves. It's still really fast with leves. I never use leves on combat jobs anymore because they're so much more useful for Hand and Land classes...

This may be true, though at the later levels it is incredibly slow if one does not have leves to burn on it. And like you, I pretty much exclusively use leves for DoH and DoL jobs, but when have the choices of conserving materials for crafting or faster gathering XP, usually the material conservation wins, not to mention the crafting leves are some of the more profitable ones to do.

Perhaps they could tweak the rates at higher levels more to prevent the flooding of the higher items just from leveling, as very easy to end up mining over 5,000 items to get to a new group of nodes at the later levels.

As part of what makes gathering such a chore to level up, is quite often most of the materials can gather while leveling have very little value to sell unless you are able to craft with the items yourself.
