I rather have new battle system and new job system before talking about companies
no matter how much contents they implement to the game, if we have to play it with current battle and job system.... it's still SUCKS!

yeah i so much like the idea of running up to a mob and letting auto attack kill it for me while i eat dinner much more important than something we can enjoy as a group.

I would like to hope that the large changes they are making to the battle system are not just auto attack. And I agree with you, group activities are important, almost more important than the battle system itself. However, without proper groundwork for us to work together and support each other, the gameplay is limited and uninteresting. It's not the people at that point, but the system, you know? That probably needs to be altered first, then they can add the content ontop of it for us to work together. =)
(Btw, I'm not thrilled about auto attack either. =P But that is not really the topic at hand, yeah?)
oh i agree i was just referring to things like player ran companies would be unaffected by the battle changes so would be no reason to hold those type changes off. now if the player ran companies teamed up against some gigantic mob and needed the updates that could be a discussion, but there was not really much info released before the knee jerk dev team change.I would like to hope that the large changes they are making to the battle system are not just auto attack. i just always see how everything the higher level people had promised to them has to hold off because of battle changes, but it is ok to release 20 mid level nm's and all kinds of side quests. if one shouldn't be implemented shouldn't it all have been held off on if the battle changes were going to be this drastic?

Well those 20 NMs and sidequests really aren't much, don't you think? The quests aren't all that engaging, though some do give some interesting lore. And the NMs are just the mobs themselves but with more hp? Sometimes they're not even larger than their non NM counterparts. Look at Gluttonous Gertrude. So disappointed! I thought she would have been a huge dodo or something but some of the mobs around her, which happen to be dodos, were...dare I say... bigger looking? Anyway, I feel like all those things are just short-term content for people to eat that doesn't take much to prepare, yeah?oh i agree i was just referring to things like player ran companies would be unaffected by the battle changes so would be no reason to hold those type changes off. now if the player ran companies teamed up against some gigantic mob and needed the updates that could be a discussion, but there was not really much info released before the knee jerk dev team change.

Hopefully it's just stalling while they get the better stuff ready. =p

We're wavering a touch off track here.
The point isn't how valuable we individually thing player run companies would be, nor how they compare to a new battle system, nor how similar or different they are to guilds in other games.
The point and question is just this: 'Will player run companies ever exist?'
It was heavily hinted (IE: with a sledgehammer) that they would, now the Grand Companies imply almost as heavily that they won't. We just want to know if they're still even a consideration at any point in FFXIV's future, or if Linkshell's are all we'll ever get.
Of course, aside from that, let's go ahead and debate them. Just try not to derail it so far the dev's miss any value.
Personally, from the games I've played, Linkshell's are the most like chatrooms of any guild in any MMO, quite possibly excluding the slew of F2P games. They lack quite a bit that has to be supplemented by the players themselves in very roundabout ways. These, rather needed, improvements don't have to come now, especially as there's quite a lot on SE's plate here, but they 'should' happen in some form. The proposed mail system they've mentioned should help a bit, so long as items can be mailed, but that's still just a stop gap.
But in the end, if we don't get them, we don't. It'll be just like XI, handling practically all LS affairs outside of the game entirely. Can be done though, clearly.
Just tell us: will we, or won't we?
At least if it's still in the works or not. =pWe're wavering a touch off track here.
