all you can do now is either buy a PC copy and hope you can play it without lag that way or stick it out until they fix/patch the lag problem.

Well that's the problem, neither of my laptops would be able to run the game. I purchased the game fully expecting it to be functional on the console it's on.

Indeed that does suck. You might want to try running this http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/benchmark/ just to make sure you can't run the game. But sadly there really is nothing else you can do since tunnelling isn't available on console as far as I'm aware. Although you might want to look into it just in case.
