I was under the impression that they were simply pushed back due to time constraints and other priorities.
I'll try and link it when I find it, but Yoshida mentioned in another interview that, for example, before building that cake with fellow company members that Tanaka had touted, they needed to find a use for that cake. So while cake building may seem like a trivial, small part of it, the overarching message to me sounds like they're still trying to work out how exactly player-run companies will function, and that Grand Companies were prioritized to add more content.
EDIT: Here's the interview: http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/2011/03...naoki-yoshida/

That interview talked about joint crafting a cake, and yes, it was mentioned that group crafting was something they wanted to pursue. But that response did not tell us that joint crafting would be part of player-run companies. I do not see any reason to believe that the joint crafting would be part of anything other than the Grand Companies, or possibly some other type of quest. Ever since the very first Letter from the Producer, the planned changes in the "Companies" section has only been regarding public companies, now renamed Grand Companies.I was under the impression that they were simply pushed back due to time constraints and other priorities.

Of course, the last producer's letter said:
Maybe we'll get some mention of player run companies when that happens, but honestly, I don't think linkshell-type companies are planned for this game at all anymore. In my next letter, I’ll be sure to update the list of game changes. (Sorry it’s been so long...)
And that's why we need linkshell banks.![]()

In that interview, no, they didn't specifically mention companies. But the original presentation back in mid-September where groups crafting cakes were shown alongside cannons, boats, etc. as well as showing off company housing were examples of what players could expect of player-run companies. Of course, this was September, so I'm sure things have changed...but it's the closest we've gotten to any substantial information. That interview talked about joint crafting a cake, and yes, it was mentioned that group crafting was something they wanted to pursue. There has always been mention of public companies ( ie. the Grand Companies of Eorzea ) and private companies ( player run ). Nobody's actually announced that private companies have been scrapped; I imagine basic linkshell functionality needs to be improved before they can happen, and that's lower in priority than battle system changes.
Pretty sure I read somewhere that the the private companies are still on the table but they are trying to give context to them before implementing them. There has always been mention of public companies ( ie. the Grand Companies of Eorzea ) and private companies ( player run ).
