The problem with Tanaka's direction was that he was taking it way too far from other MMOs. There are genre-defining systems at this point that people expect from MMOs. There are things that work in other games for a reason and most of the unique systems that the original team came up with fell flat on their face. Good on paper, poor execution. I'm all for innovation and trying different things but there is a base that needs to be established first.

Yoshida is putting in those things from other MMOs that work, the things that have become genre-defining. He's establishing that base of things that people expect from both Final Fantasy and the MMO genre. After that we'll see what happens, I like where it's going myself though.
