I'd also argue that new players coming from elsewhere might be somewhat turned off by log-only (The reason I made this thread was that I got a couple of friends to join up, and neither of them liked that in particular) so I would argue that potentially it's not a waste of resources at all if it makes the experience more user-friendly.

I could argue that introducing the remaining genders is a waste of resources from my point of view, that doesn't make it correct.

EDIT: To add, whether or not its redundant would also remain to be seen, as I suggested it would be useful to grab the attention of players (in the same vein as the quest "!"'s which have been added to all mission NPCs too, something that my friends found to be pretty useful in working out where they needed to go.)
Regardless of knowing the setup of the team it can still be deemed a waste of resources, specifically at this point in the game's life. It simply isn't a game breaker/maker.

And it being redundant does not "remain to be seen." Displaying the same information in several spots on a screen at any given time is redundant (see superfluous, excessive, etc.) The quest exclamation points are completely different, if you can't bring yourself to move your eyes several millimetres to a different spot on the screen, well... that's just unfortunate for you.

    FF9 had speech bubbles, too.

Same could be said about resizing mobs, adding 3D onscreen text for damage display, adding a pop up text for when a light and full party are formed. Still they implemented it and it looks great.

Yoshi already stated different parts of the team do different things, so I doubt that getting speech bubbles would derail the team from releasing chocobos or whatever.

Pretty sure PSO also had a chatlog in case you missed something but you could just leave it closed unless you wanted to check something that was said.

Now that I think about it, FFXIV could use making the players look at the screen and not at a chatlog... this in hand with damage being displayed on screen goes pretty well together.

Not so. They were used City of Heroes/Villains/Rogues, and I can't recall ever having a problem with them cluttering up the screen, even when in full parties.

to make fun of the people who use that as their point to be against a lot of things, be it jumping or teleporting. They don't seem to have problems with 6ft tall extinct birds or enormous scorpions, or any of the other wide number of things in FF14 that they will never see.

I never said those were great uses of time either. Nor did I say I gave a shit about chocobos?

Yea, no thanks, again, screen clutter, there's a reason for UIs.

Yep definitely... actually listed bubbles for chat in another thread hehe players only of course... or maybe npc's in the future that shout stuff at you as you past :P It's very FF ^^ Make it classic background blue too xD

I don't think it would be aesthetically pleasing. The giant exclamation points over every npc that can hand out a quest is already a freaking eyesore. I don't mind it on the main map, and the mini map, but why does it have to be there right over their heads as well! -,-

    QFT

The text is already there. To me it seems a waste of the programmers' time to implement something like this.

    Just filter your chat tabs.
