Yep and its definitely suiting^^ ... Has some nice similarities to 7's , but different enough to fit in well into this world/game and yet make it unique to this FFSounds great all around, and soooo many possibilities with the added traits thingy hehe <3
Here's a bit of speculation:
The bonuses we have on equipment now can be +, - and %. Based on this we have a good idea of the types of bonuses the materia can give.
In most other games using a similar gem/slot system there are tiers to gems, usually with the ability to combine multiple lower tier gems to make a single higher tier gem.
Some games like Monster Hunter have stat gems as well as gems that give passive abilities. I don't foresee this happening though as that is an integral system for that game and doesn't exist in this game at this point.
In FFVII there was a materia growth system. It would be interesting if we saw that make a comeback in some form for the materia.
If they implement AP for Materia that you have equipped I would not be against having it so that skill points earned were funneled into it.
so like if your weapon is a 1 Slot weapon 10% of what you gain in SP also gains to the Materia. *not subtracted from total SP earned just mirrored*
If its a 2 slot its 15%, on and on.
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
mmm, this sounds like a fun system to dirty my hands with. I hope it makes the final cut and we end up seeing something very similar to this one day.
As for the name, I can dig it. Materia is just latin for material, so it fits further with their current naming themes, I don't think Yoshi-P is trying to milk the VII cow at all. It's not like he is renaming all Gladiator skills; climhazzard/meteor rain/omnislash! etc. Now if he were to rename it to the spoony bard system..
Can I put knights of the round in my armor?
It will be interesting to see how much they bring over from the FFVII system. If they brought over materia growth I could easily see them also having pieces of equipment that have no growth. Even then there's also linked slots and whatnot. We'll see what they do with it, it certainly won't be a clone of the system but taking the name may entail some other details are brought over too.
I like the nostalgia of the name, and the system sounds good.
I'd still like to be able to sell Materia equipment. Making it unsellable doesn't appeal to me as a crafter. But I can understand why they would do that. My other thought is I hope that we can remove materia from a piece of gear, for example, later down the line you get a better piece of materia, but you've used up all your slots, I think you should be able to change out the current set, so you aren't stuck.
However, this does sound like it's going to be a good system to add into the game.![]()

Materia could also have skill bases as in FF7. This could be the way that a future Summoner class learns their abilities, and additionally having a Fire materia equipped could lower the cast speed, mp cost, and stamina cost of all the Fire spells.Because not everyone reads the other forums I'm cross posting this link.

This is a Community Rep with a translation from Yoshida speaking of a possible Materia System coming soon.
as well heres how I'm hoping its working.
But for the purpose of this thread. Do you think the Nostalgia factor of calling it Materia will appease a lot of players? How do you hope it will work? How do you think this will affect crafting in the long run?
They should definitely change the name... Materia!? This is FFXIV, not FFVII-2!!!!!
