Materia could also have skill bases as in FF7. This could be the way that a future Summoner class learns their abilities, and additionally having a Fire materia equipped could lower the cast speed, mp cost, and stamina cost of all the Fire spells.Because not everyone reads the other forums I'm cross posting this link.

This is a Community Rep with a translation from Yoshida speaking of a possible Materia System coming soon.
as well heres how I'm hoping its working.
But for the purpose of this thread. Do you think the Nostalgia factor of calling it Materia will appease a lot of players? How do you hope it will work? How do you think this will affect crafting in the long run?
They should definitely change the name... Materia!? This is FFXIV, not FFVII-2!!!!!

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

LoL ... best comeback... ever!!! o.o Hehe
Who's saying this is VII-2 anyways Col? Just cause they wanna use one single name from 7 doesn't mean squat! FF's are known for their constant reuse of terms and other such things, this is no different... Yoshi is making this game into a actual FINAL FANTASY unlike Tanaka who wanted basically EVERYTHING different except for those that needed to be changed or added upon... like races *facepalm* If you don't like one final fantasy game using idea's or terms from another then you should quit while you're ahead xD Simple as that! LoL
All of what you said was completely correct and was the point I was trying to make.LoL ... best comeback... ever!!! o.o Hehe

I've seen a LOT of people saying "This is FFXIV, not FFXI-2!" as a response to whenever someone mentions an aspect or feature of FFXI that they think should return in FFXIV(yes even to things as stupid as using the same name for something). My post was to mock those people and show them how it's stupid to say that.
If it's good/fun idea and could fit into, or even make FFXIV better, why NOT include it? Who cares if it was in a past FF game; it's okay to reuse ideas, and you could even expand upon them to make it better. FFXIV trying to be so unique is what made this mess in the first place.

I see what you did there xD Hehe Just took it serious cause that's a very serious and often used response to EVERYTHING. Just like your example of FF XI-2, gets really old when people use that and like minded responses haha... and ya 100% agree with you^^All of what you said was completely correct and was the point I was trying to make.

In that sense, Chocobos should be horsebirds and the inevitable Cid should be named Steve.
I'm not a huge fan of VII by any means, but I like how they're injecting a sense of familiarity into the game.
XI:Shadowtaru (Alexander)Manifest(Shiva) Volnaru (Asura)
1.0: Delirium Impulse (MysidiaGungnir)
ARR:Dashe Herate (Sargatanas)Dashe Voln (Excalibur)
I like the idea of branching out their current systems, but just calling a core mechanic something solely for nostalgic purposes rather than lore invocation seems like a hollow cop-out. Plus they already have this in the form of a thing called Dissidia :P
While this new system is based off the concept of materia, I feel in the end it's not the materia system and shouldn't be named so... There are certain elements in final fantasy that spread throughout all games (crystals, chocobos, airship, cid) and others that define and make each game unique and special (draw system, sphere grid, ADB). Materia and the materia system is something very intertwined with VII's story and is something that defines and makes VII special. By recycling the name materia when it isn't the same as FFVII just for "nostalgic value" or get people's attention because it's a name they know and like, I feel it cheapens the name for me... and other instances of materia in other ff games like tactics and dissidia aren't reusing the name materia for something else, but is a throwback and "special item" if you will, simply referring to materia from VII. In XIV, crystals are called "crystals" or "aetherytes," why not base the name of the system off what's already established in lore? Yes, this game could certainly get more of a "final fantasy feel" to it, but for me, that means a final fantasy feel, not a final fantasy vii feel.
We know VII is Yoshida's favorite ff, and I myself love FFVII, but it's because I love it so much I don't want the name materia to be used...
