A temporary fix is fine if it can be implemented immediately. Which would you rather hear?:

    A) We are adding additional servers on the Japan data center for NA/EU players next week, we will transfer these servers to the NA datacenter when funds and technical resources allow. We apologize for the increased ping times.
    Or
    B) We are adding additional servers on the NA/EU data center in 30 days, please continue to spam Error 1017 until the new servers are added.

I would rather they simply given the full honest answer with the state of things as they know them and their plans for both short term and long term resolution. Yes the news might be unwelcome, but it's much better than the constant apologies but lacking any real information. As it is, their announcements are more akin to jerking people around than providing any sort of actual update.

That is fine too. I am trying to illustrate the point, that if they can add servers for JP, they can add servers for NA/EU, even if they are just in Japan. Their failure to add servers(or even tell us a plan) when we started having congestion, combined with their immediate willingness to do so when JP starts getting congestion, means they are discriminating against us because we are not Japanese.

I may be wrong, but don't things like servers tend to be made in that part of the world? Perhaps the Japanese simply had easier access to these sort of gaming-grade servers?

Though none of that excuses the poor communication on SE's part, which is the real problem here.

Also, it's my understanding the Japanese aspect of things and the NA/EU part of things are run by different teams, it's only discriminatory if there were one team choosing to work on their servers instead of ours, rather it's just unfortunate that the team in charge of NA/EU isn't as efficient as the team in Japan, particularly relating to communication.

Having said that, the game was made in Japan, which means fixes and patches tend to come from that direction, and so happen there first, because that's where the team is. Once they find fixes they can send the data over to their counterpart.... although server issues aren't really game issues at all, and the NA/EU team should be able to handle that, since their main job is to look after those servers....

They can add servers in the JP data center for NA/EU players. Or they can announce they will offer free transfers for people joining Japanese servers to the NA/EU servers at a later date. That would be the simplest thing to do and would solve almost all of the frustration at the lack of communication.

The fact that there was no communication for us except suck it up, and then the Japanese immediately get notified they are adding capacity, is discriminatory towards NA/EU.

This is an international company we are talking about, not a mom and pop store opening up another location in a different country. They may be hiring some local talent to be their onsite hands on people but ultimately everything comes from Square Enix and is managed by them. Unless they are totally inept they would have someone from their home offices visit any offsite data center locations for confirmation and checks. They bear the ultimate responsibility for everything done in their name, so they would be making sure things were set up as they desired. Yes mistakes are made, but many of the people making excuses on behalf of SE are approaching it from the stand point that they can't be held responsible for communication issues between NA/EU and JP. Honestly, that's bull. This is not the first time that SE has worked with others in different countries, I can attest to that personally in fact.

Hardware can be shipped anywhere in the world, and they would be using the same set up regardless of location of their data centers because that is standard protocol. You do not use different equipment in this sort of scenario unless its a temporary stop gap you had to put in place or you simply could no longer get the stuff you had previously.

^^ I agree with this. Unfortunately, most game companies keep their mouths closed on their plans to avoid breaking promises. But gamers would rather know what is planned so they know what to expect.
