And as you guessed it, depending on what type of item it is depends on what type of catalyst you need. And the different Disciple of the Land classes garner different catalysts suited for the varied item types.

Or you can simply ask someone to affix Materia for you. But be warned, the first MATERIA is free, the next on the same item may result in complete destruction!

Materia rules changed a bit. As long as it has an open slot, it is a 100% success rate to meld materia. If the materia is being added, and there are no open slots, there's a chance it will fail. If it fails, you lose the materia and the catalyst, but not the item(in 1.0 you lost everything and there was no guarantee).

That's not true, anymore at least, all materia needs is Grade X Carbonized Matter, where X is the level of the material.
