My thoughts:
-Yoshi said he wanted the direction on classes having more than one job.
-Yoshi said we are putting iconic jobs and gear set that should be readily identifiable.
-Why put a gear set (clone it from XI) on a cover that a large portion of the player base would see a scholar and not have it be a scholar?
-The game currently has a single healing job and could use another. Scholars in previous FF were healer/DPS
-SE loves to tease content/jobs being released.
-Summoner was announced AFTER the player base stumbled on an error on the web site.
-Even the developer blog is bring attention to the "scholar" character
-I showed my wife, who never played a FF before ff14, that "job wheel" picture and her reaction was, "Cool, looks like we are getting another job... is she wear a graduate or scholar cap... is there a FF job that wears those in another FF?"

To me, if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck...

if it isn't SE just trolled A LOT of players with "Hey everyone, look at this thing that looks exactly like the scholar from FFXI!"

To then respond to that with, "Oh that, that is just the arcanist that we announced earlier... sorry to make you think we had something new."
There's a few things they draw attention to quietly or unnoticed. One I can remember off the top of my head was Foxclon mentioning how "Unique" this armor was.

Yeah it's unique.. just like the Bear PvP armor. Why did he choose to mention it over this and not the other armor?

Of course all we can do is speculate, but that's alright to do when we don't know if there's something(s) they're keeping hush hush until release or soon after.
