A lot of people find leveling fun. If you do not enjoy it doesn't mean no one does. I meet people daily in game who enjoy doing it. That does not mean we always do it, we explore, NM and do more things depends on the mood. But we certainly DO enjoy it and spend HOURS doing some leveling.

Exactly, I think leveling should be fun and be a part of the process, not something you rush through to get to content I must admit at the moment I don't find it the most interesting, but certainly in many other games I have played I have found leveling fun, so it can be done!

Anyways, as you said yourself, there are other methods of progression than just ranking up.

Quests that give abilities, merit systems, titles, gear grind, not to mention the communal progression systems SE intends to implement like Company Housing and Ships.
Do you know what a Merit System is?

LOL, I know, an even worse grind. But I envisioned more interesting ways of earning merit points than what FFXI did.

whats the point of playing a game to be limited? I would actually prefer no level cap and be free to reach the limit you want.

I rip the axe from the head Covered in blood and brains Leave the body lying dead Ready to strike again
My sword cuts through clothes and skin Like a hot knife cuts through snow I smile as the bastard screams When I twist my sword
Sword in my hand Axe on my side Valhalla awaits me Soon I will die Bear skin on my back Wolf jaw on my head Valhalla awaits me When I'm dead

    Viking Job Please!

    I suppose because

    A) people aren't free to become superheroes if we train hard enough. We are limited by flesh and blood.
    B) it would be impractical from a development standpoint, providing content suitable for the players. Godly players could one-shot NMs and then everyone would feel inadequate and be like 'screw this'.

Well the only things I could think of were equipment and skills.

It would be strange, to me, to have a bunch of R50 equipment with only a few pieces being better than all the rest.

Introduction of new skills would be hard as then you'd just end up having slow progression in skills to R50 and then a ton bunched up at the end.

That being said these are minor problems that don't really cause any inconvenience, merely a small bit of confusion for players just reaching 50. I'd be fine with having gear like that and having quest/guild mark/company rewarded skills.

I will forever fail to see how fifty whole ranks is not enough grinding when there is scarcely anything to even do in-between the ranks, and then by the time you have completed your task and want to take it easy, they place a new artificial ceiling, forcing you to grind all over again.

I think there is a place for levelling up and fighting on mobs with no real reason for doing so other than to "get better". But Fifty is as good a number as any, imo.

Take Guild Wars for example, you reached level 20 in Prophecies about 3/4 of the way through the story if you weren't really trying and you could get it much sooner if you were. In all the other campaigns you hit 20 before leaving the "starter" area lol. It never really struck anyone who enjoyed the game as odd or limiting.

The only problem I see with FFXIV is that I believe it was originally designed with a level cap raise in mind, and thus 50 was never meant to be the end-game rank and the current skills and equipment reflect that.

I guess. For example, crafting-wise, we still have silk and basilik leather and darksteel and mythril and gold items yet to be released, but at R50 we have nowhere for these items to be implemented. We are out of tiers! And I'm not sure horizontal content really works for crafted gear like that.

That's really the only reason I can find to justify a raise in level cap, but even then it is scarcely much of a reason at all.
