The grind is by far the most boring aspect of any RPG. Are people really that eager to get more of it? Grinding is the only thing to do in XIV at the moment. Grind DoH, grind DoM, grind Dol and then grind quests that are just like leves designed for grinding. Then come back on these forums and ask for more grinding on all of the above.
I'm speechless.
A half-eaten cheeseburger, for me? You shouldn't have!

They need to raise the cap eventually. 50 is a bit low.
They have a lot of other things to worry about before that, though.
Horizontal progression is perfect for a game where you can switch class whenever you want. Let them add a new kind of progression, either on top of the armory system or new classes and balance the content once for all at rank 50.
MMO that can raise their level cap and make all their content obsolete every years are only a few. FF14 definitely won't have the development power to do that decently...

Leveling is actually part of what makes an MMO "fun". I've played the "non-grindy" MMOs where there are no levels and it felt so boring. I never realized how much i enjoyed leveling until i played one of those. But that's more along the lines of not having any levels at all.
However, it is a nice feeling not having to worry about a level cap increase at any time.

What's the point?
To make players feel more powerful?
To make players do more quests?
Can't blizzard just introduce new skills, raids or maybe classes&races to WOW without raising the level cap?
Is it really necessary?
By raising the level cap, new players will never have the chance to do "old" raids.

Healers could focus on either single target healing or AoE healing, same with DPS, and tanks could pick between increased magic or physical mitigation. However you structure it, the system would allow character growth that would feel similar to gaining experience and leveling, without actually changing the level cap. Quests and even monster kills could all contribute to an ‘alternate XP’ pool, and players could spend those points on growth paths of their choosing.

Personally, I'm for whatever keeps things fun. My, quick, overview of raising the cap vs not based on our system now(assuming the upcoming changes don't radically adjust the way we use abilities etc).
NOT increasing level cap:
General gameplay elements/strategies are well recognized & adopted
Increasing strength of character through armor/enchants or merit-type systems
Won't have that Lv.99 Final Fantasy feel. (this one is pretty lol, but still)
Is easier to level other classes for abilities
No radical adjustments making it easier for SE to balance new content(dungeons, classes etc).
Newly added abilities would need to come from armor, merit system, new classes or placed as Lv.50 abilities
Increasing level cap:
Staying active through leveling
More abilities for classes
Personal sense of strengthening/increasing your character
Longer grinding to learn other classes' abilities (likely to become very annoying)
More quests based on level.
Conclusion: I'll easily lean towards staying at a set cap.
If they are going to raise the level cap, SE should decide early on what that cap will be. Additionally, they should implement it fairly quick and not stretch it out over years & years.
Either way, it is possible to have both vertical & horizontal progression.

You forgot than increasing level cap add the gigantic constraint of having to develop new content each raise, or rebalance the whole existing, as the previous will become trivial due to over-level.

Getting 50 is to easy and so is getting 75 in XI, but due to the way XI is now and lack of peeps playing (hence all merges required), getting content done prior to caps was sometimes tough, but at least when you're 90 you can do them with a few people, Hell ya can do all the SKY stuff with like 3-4 people once it hits 99 lol. Dont need the 18 you used to need at 75.
Sadly a lot of that gear is now redundant unless they come out with some system to improve them. This is one of the major issues with level caps, thats why everyone is raging their relics are lol now (and so is anything prior abyssea gear wise), and that isn't even abyssea's fault, its just the level cap. You cant be expected to be 90 or 99 and still be wearing 75 gear so they had to do something to provide new gears.
My opinion is dont increase it without a bucket load of content and if you have current gear/items that are so god damn hard to get, allow them to be improved up to the cap.
I would prefer it not being 50 though. Or impliment the idea of Quest gets you Abilities, (rather than levels)
Personally, I don't believe getting to cap should be too difficult or time-consuming. Getting to R50 in FFXIV is even more tedious than it should be, in my opinion. Anyways, cap shouldnt be the goal, it should be the launching point for the fun, now that you got the tedious stuff out of the way.Getting 50 is to easy and so is getting 75 in XI, but due to the way XI is now and lack of peeps playing (hence all merges required), getting content done prior to caps was sometimes tough, but at least when you're 90 you can do them with a few people, Hell ya can do all the SKY stuff with like 3-4 people once it hits 99 lol. Anyways, as you said yourself, there are other methods of progression than just ranking up.
Quests that give abilities, merit systems, titles, gear grind, not to mention the communal progression systems SE intends to implement like Company Housing and Ships.

Do you know what a Merit System is?Personally, I don't believe getting to cap should be too difficult or time-consuming. Getting to R50 in FFXIV is even more tedious than it should be, in my opinion.
