There is no camping. The NM mobs don't share a spawn spot with normal mobs of the same species. I don't mind the new NMs, but there's no adrenaline involved, which is what made NM camping in FFXI so addicting.

Regarding the waiting in a room scenario, the maps are large enough they could spread the spawn area over a large section of the zone, or have multiple spawn locations across the zone.

What made NM camping in FFXI "addicting" was simply that people wanted the loot. There's nothing addictive (or even fun) about waiting. Want adrenaline? Make people actually play to get the mob, instead of making them wait.
Waiting is the polar opposite of adrenaline.

Which makes lottery spawning obsolete. If you spread the spawn areas you don't need repop timers/mechanics at all, as searching for an NM before the kill effectively implies times between pops.
Mind you, without mechanics in place to locate the mob, this method ends up being based solely on luck.

Adrenaline? With waiting? It was the cause of so many updates attempting to move away from it, it made ZNM, BCNM, tons of activities that had people do anything BUT wait. What with the ToD and all on some mobs, it got fairly hectic and unhealthy.

And I'm not sure how large spawn locations would help ,especially if dungeons are involved.

Yes, adrenaline. You know the rush you get when you see a unique monster? There's none of this with the current system. Maybe lottery spawn isn't the best way of creating the same sort of tension, but right now FFXIV is lacking in it. I can only offer my observations on what makes for addictive gameplay for me. Some people don't want world NMs at all, and would like to see everything instanced.

I know what adrenaline is. I just don't think the idea of rats hovering around a timed pellet machine is what we would want to give to the dev team as "addictive gameplay". It's certainly not my idea of it.

Might want to talk for yourself. For me the adrenaline is the same. The unique mob is still there, if it's camped there's still the moment of claim. The only difference is that the adrenaline is not preceeded by the utter mindnumbing boredom of waiting, and followed by the frustration of waiting again.

This not to mention the fact that the current system pairs the (still existing) adrenaline with the pleasure of teaming up with others (instead of seeing them all as enemy) and making new friends, that results in a better community.

    Which is all gain.
