It has been mentioned and I have no idea why people think its "well played". It would be silly not to have it as a setting.
Not everyone can handle that many objects on the screen at once. For them lowering grass is like lowering shadows - it helps a crap ton.

Even high quality grass looks like lego though; leaves on trees also, which make such shadows look like lego too...which is worrying; especially for Gridania where there's tonnes of trees/grass; all shadows will look like lego.
shadow smoothing should take care of that.
the number one performance destroyer in games is foliage, the second is shader quality. put the two together and watch your VRam choke and your GPU melt.
When SE named that setting "Grass Quaility" not some extra details, but exactly "GRASS" i thought it was a speacial joke from Yoshi after all "Grass THreads"![]()
The grass looked like grass to me.
the grass is just a plane with a texture on it nothing fancy.
You know what? I think your right
I participated in these threads, as a half joke, but also half serious.
I'm well aware of the performance issues UBER grass causes. And you know what? After watching that benchmark with so many other things going on I hardly noticed the grass! Okay so I DID notice it was jaggy. But it didn't detract from the other totally EPIC things going on in the scene!
