No kidding, right? I jumped to the last page, discovered there'd been multiple pages since I was last able to check, and it sounds like folks are still going "WHM needs to be onry healer or else! Only valid MMO classes are Tank, Healer, and eleventy-gillion DPSers!"
I have come to the conclusion that the majority of the people posting in here supporting the “WHM should be the only healer in game” either have not had to endure leveling without WHM healers or are choosing to forget this.
In early 1.0 we had no real class identity, which lead to classes stealing all the best abilities to be used universally, which lead to CON and THM becoming “healing class only” up to cap. No biggie, when only one healer exists in the game this is bound to happen. But what people may choose to forget is that we also used Lol-Glad as a healing class in exp groups. If you threw Mana gear on glad and had access to Sacrifice and/or cure II or III, you were healing. But tbh Glad was so utterly useless by comparison in Lev quests/grinding back then it was possibly the best use for them. Remember ARC notching 3 arrows + Blindside, how was glad to compete.
Let us not forget about the PL fiasco, which took players up to cap on all jobs in hours instead of weeks/months. If all those people were exp normally I’m sure a cry for another healing class might have been a bit louder in 1.0
After they gave the classes identity: ARC > BRD, MRD > WAR, etc etc it was evident that all the players leveling up during this time were stuck looking for PL or waiting days to find a healer to group with.
As a new player I would not want to come into a game only to find myself stuck leveling solo or being almost forced into getting PL’d to cap, just to play the game, where is the fun in that?
I, personally, don't have a problem with there being other healers in the game. Heck, if another class has a healing ability, good for them. But MY point is, White Mage should be the BEST healer in the game, since the very nature of it's class is, in fact, healing. Seriously, I'm not gonna flip out if another class knows Cure. But the higher leveled healing spells (Cura, Curaga, Curaja) should remain WHM exclusive. Nothing wrong with having another class as an off-healer though. In fac,t really, every mmo has classes that can act as off-healers. So, why would anyone think people are gonna lose it if other classes in the game can heal? Gimme a break, lol.
Other classes being able to heal - Cool
Other classes being able to heal as well as a WHM/Priest - Not cool
Just my $0.02 on the subject.
I think they fear the fate of FFXI's WHM (75 cap). I remember it became very difficult to level from 60+ on WHM due to RDM's superiority in exp pty/general content. Which i guess only got worse with the introduction of DNC and SCH. Although WHM was still useful for Harder difficulty events, its usefulness for everyday events was minimal.
TL;DR situational shit is situational, they fear WHM becoming a niche class only useful in a handful of events.
By that reckoning.....
Monk should be the single best dps class in the game because the nature of monk is in fact to do dps
Dragoon should be the single best dps class in the game because the nature of draggon is in fact to do dps
Wait a minute........
See the problem there?
You can't have a best at something, that's game breaking, but white mage has more to offer than others, and that is damage mitigation especially enhanced by its conjurer traits. This makes white mage, not the best healer in the game, but a strong Healer/Support. Although by any means, it's 15 minute ability does make it a choice healer in dangerous situations. For standard healing, other jobs can apply.
Actually...By that reckoning.....

Monk should be the best DPS when it comes to fighting with bare hand/fists, claws, and gauntlets. Capable of doing as much damage unrmed as someone who has a sword.
Dragoon has it's own set of abilities that are Dragoon specific, also it should be the best damage dealer when it comes to using lances.
Yep, sounds logic to me. (shrug) Anyway, your post has a moot point because Monsa and Dragoons are not tailored specifically just to do DPS. I'm talking about what their specific talents are geared for. WHM is a healer. Monk is best at unarmed brawling. Dragoon should have it's lancer and dragoon abilities better than anyone. I'm not trying to be rude, but it's really not that hard. lol
I believe you missed his point completely. Monk and Lancer are both melee dps. They are both be good at melee dps. Their skills are named differently, look different, they wear different armor, and their combos are different, but in the end they hit the enemy with their melee weapons and do melee damage. New melee class/job will be the exact same thing.Actually...

There should be single class or job that is the best at a given role. If they are going to do it with the melee, they need to do it with the tanks, healers, and m/rdps. Its terrible MMO design otherwise.
