Hell I remember back in the 80's when Dungeons and Dragons (Yes the board game) was being blamed for people going crazy for cocoa - puffs.
Its easier to blame video games then the real issue - which is dealing with the mental aspect of human behavior. ( Or in other words taking responsibility for ones behavior and actions. )

Common sense in society seems to be in short supply while stupidity seems to be in in high demand with law makers.

It's not stupidity. Investigating the latest controversy in "outrage-aholic" societies is a very effective way to get press coverage and gain supporters. And the opposite, saying no and/or presenting data and studies to the contrary, comes across as ignoring the will of your constituents. A lawmaker doesn't even have to effect real change, just hold investigations or maybe draft a bill if the interest lasts that long.

As far as this story: The mob outrage mentality doesn't care which video game it is. It's "close enough", even if the actual game had been a non-SE game. Ever hear of Jim Jones or the expression "drink the Kool-Aid"? It was actually Flavor Aid. "Who cares?" you say? Yeah, same thing here.
