The timing might make a few players have issue if they're only able to play one game, but in the end quality, not timing, will decide which is "the victor" if you want to break it down to that.

Nothing will happen. Every time a new MMO is announced a thread like this pops up.
The big fear I have with TESO is that you may have a munch of people who will jump at the game expecting it to be like Skyrim only to find out there's no dhovakin during the period of time the game takes place. Skyrim was an awesome game, but it also created a set of expectations for the series and gave it a huge exposure it did not have prior.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
    * Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

As fun as it would be to Dragon Shout people off cliffs.. it's not in the lore, and there are so many other cool things you can do instead. I just hope the whole story about losing your soul is worthwhile. I'll hopefully be playing both A Realm Reborn and Elder Scrolls Online, side by side. Both seem like pretty different experiences, and it'll be nice to have the contrast between Western and Japanese developers.

i would love for ESO to be great, but if people can't see from the promo videos that it's almost certainly going to be pretty awful, well...

This might be Zenimax Online Stuido's first MMO (this sub company was founded for ESO), but it's employees are not novices.
That still doesn't guarantee absolute success. Look at past examples. Things can go horribly wrong no matter how experienced your lead team is.

Heh?? Of course it's in the lore, you mean the lore Bethesda invented and continually add themselves? O.o But a dragonborn is both really rare and overpowered for an MMO, so you won't ever see that in gameplay. But you can play as werewolf or vampire, it's some sort of addon ability or extra class tree.

And no it's not going to be Skyrim Online, but it will have elements from it, which is to say it's going to play like an MMO in Tamriel. Questing seems a lot like WoW and GW2, and their server system also reminds a lot of GW2, say hello to instancing! And with everyone getting their own statue in towns I'm wondering just how much instancing there will be.

I will say their revised combat looks like a lot of fun that above anything else is where I think they will shine. And I still stick to my original post, TESO will garner a lot of people at first and may or may not keep a lot of them. While ARR will start more slowly and gain people as we go along, and if the community grows steadily enough we'll have a solid community.

As for which is more successful on paper it's still hard to say. But TESO has more advantages when it comes to popularity in the West as pointed out. Then again Age of Conan was supposed to revolutionize the MMO scene and was huge, at first... :S

In the end I'm just happy FFXIV is still alive.

    PS. Skyrim is awesome.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but if TESO is to succeed, it has to pull something that other MMO's cannot. The world and lore alone won't do it. Star Wars believed this and it bit them in the ass. I am not doubting TESO has something up their sleeve, but what is it? I don't see anything spectacular outside the typical MMO with the game so far.

Action Combat, which has been done but it looks pretty cool, the classes can be customized beyond most games, and I believe armors have no levels so you can wear any of them. TESO brings a lot of stuff from other MMOs and bring it together for their game just like FFXIV, which is why it might be a good rival.

TBH I think that game looks pretty average..

You can't always make single player RPG's into MMO's. The Skyrim/ES fans will be disappointed.
Graphics look dated / cheap / rough.. I mean they are flashy, but lots of unnatural looking lighting and a "cartoony" feel. That is personal taste though.
    Fighting/running animations look dumb.
    Gameplay looks mehh.. Nothing new/different..
I think that the game has far too much hype, and runs the risk of not meeting expectations (similar to XIV 1.0). I could eat my words but I won't be picking that game up.

Actually, that sounds really cool if executed well. It sounds like it will be a pain in the ass to keep a system like that balanced, but we will see how that goes. I do feel pretty confident that TESO will at least be in the top five successful MMO's in the market if they don't flop.

There is nothing to worry about, FFXIV is hands top notch game. I grew up playing FF, with out FF there would be no TESO er w/e they call it.
