What worries me about this is that they will have to try and balance each combat class to be competitive in PvP (which will absolutely end up happening if they're going to be serious about PvP), which might affect the PvE aspect of the game in some way - a negative one, most likely.
Accommodations for PvP will only be in effect for PvP. PvE will not suffer for it. They've already designed the abilities with both in mind.

PvE and PvP can coexist and have every right to. Neither side is more entitled to have the game made for them than the other. I have every confidence that they are making the best effort possible to keep both play styles as balanced and fair as possible.

This was not an issue in FFXI- They did not redesign WHM or BRD to be better at beating people up for instance. These classes that are not the best at direct combat are sitll valuable to have in PvP for their party roles. That being said, even in 1.0 FFXIV, with no PvP in the picture, all classes were at least competent in combat to the extent that they can all solo- and that's as far as it needs to go.

I hate it when cynicism rules the day and people assume that PvP has to ruin PvE or that they both have to ruin each other.

    How quick you forget.

"We're removing directional combos as it would be hard to do for PvP."

"We've made spell cancelling when moving because it would unbalance PvP otherwise."

They've already demonstrated that they're adjusting the whole the game to fit PvP better. Water has a knockback effect, what would this do realistically in PvE? Almost nothing in the long run because of not only GCD but it's unlikely bosses will change if you can knock them back or not.

Indeed, but PvP was a side activity and implemented as a mini-game of sorts, here it's being implemented with a focus and as said, they already demonstrated they're doing global changes for it.

Every MMO does it that has a serious form of PvP, ARR will as well.
