It would definitely be nice to have the ability to test the changes in beta 3 to see if they work in game so we don't make changes we end up regretting when we get the one time chance to change apperance.
Hi, Myranda
All character data is wiped prior to the commencement of each new BETA Phase.
Square Enix have specified on the BETA Road Map (found here: [http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxiv/dow...oadmap_EN.pdf]) that during Phase 4 we are requested to test importing our charachters. This process will most likely be identical to what we will be doing on launch, this is simply a test to make sure the system works in the grand scheme of things.
In short, this means no changes will be made to our original character data, as that will only happen on launch. Think of this as a "trial run" to make sure things work okay before the big day.
[All our character data has been backed up possibly several times according to the Dev's because of its precious nature]
Most importantly
Be VERY careful when re-entering your characters name or other imperitave information. Double...no... TRIPLE check that everything is as you believe it should be. It'll save you time in the long run if you just check it over.

Player
Also... if we change genders (which I suspect many people will be for male miqo'te), what happens to all the gender-specific gear like swimsuits? Do they get converted to the male version for us? Do we cross-dress? Or just have some now un-equippable items in the inventory?![]()
The gear adapts. I took generic gear and traded it between male/female and there was no problem... however if it is designated as gender fixed or race fixed, then it either won't be wearable or it would have to be upgraded to the new specs in ARR. I suspect the old incompatible stuff will simply disappear.
I don't honestly see it happening till official launch since the beta is really just a test and character redesign is something they can quickly look at with their SE testers... It shouldn't be something for the players to test out on their own because if there really is an issue that is found in the test it could result in irreversible unintended character designs or character names... Even if they test this in phase 3, where no changes to our 1.0 characters will stay, it is still possible to the test to miss something...
