Since they announced regional servers, I've been resigned to the likelihood of them having a few in CA and that will be it for the US. People on the east coast are still going to be almost 3,000 miles away, and the tradeoff for this is loosely segregating the playerbase.. Pretty unfortunate.
Just for anyone that isn't aware, the population density: http://www.mapofusa.net/us-population-map.gif

Did anyone else think "Starcraft: Brood War" when they saw US-West and US-East?
...
I did....the good ol' days...

Going to agree this time. Personally I think they should just have a Japanese datacenter, but I guess it's too late for them to back out on that now. There are some decisions SE will fix for us, and it feels like this isn't one of them.
Which, if anyone checks the OP again, isn't the issue here. I'm curious about SE's plans for datacenter placement, too. I always assumed California.

So from what I'm getting here alot of people are under the impression they won't be out sourcing their data centers and assume they will be in house at an HQ for SE already managed by them.
Is this the typical route international MMOs take when setting up data centers? If so I believe they may be right about 1 center for the entire NA area. That being said though I know SE already has a plan on what they are doing by now and I hope they share information about regions and what happens to characters associated with certain servers from the previous version really soon.

Well just because the servers are in the US doesn't mean your going to be guaranteed constant super excellent pings. this is an MMO server we're talking about, with hundreds logged onto it at once, not some 24 player CS server.
They'll be good with 1 Datacenter location in the US.
No, but generally your ping is going to be considerably lower. This is an MMORPG and single digit latency is not something people are going to demand- however it should still be significantly lower compared to circling half the globe to connect to Japan.Well just because the servers are in the US doesn't mean your going to be guaranteed constant super excellent pings. this is an MMO server we're talking about, with hundreds logged onto it at once, not some 24 player CS server.

You ever check your ping to various servers in the us?
Usually in the 30s-40s or less locally, up to 90-120 or so towards the west coast. 210-250 to Japan. 290-340 to various locations in Austrailia. Of course, it depends on your service as much as it depends on the location and people with a higher quality service will get lower pings than I do, and some people will get worse pings than I do (like in the 400s for japan and 500s for Aussieland). "single digit" is a slight exaggeration for point, but some people do get pings like that on destinations that are very close by (like, around the corner) with the best hardware.
