West and East servers do have their advantages in MMOs. For example if you live on the west coast you join a east coast server. The majority of the population will be trying to do raids that start at around 7pm est, which would be 4pm pst, maybe you work till at least 5 and can't play till 6. 6pm is 9pm on a east coast server which many would not want to start at 9 because they would want to go to sleep soon.

Definetly has its advantages playing on a server that is the same as your own time zone.

They need to not segregate the servers to begin with. With segregated servers you need alot more subs. Even with NA/EU/JP the chances of population problems is really high.

Imagineif you broke 3 large sections up into 4 sub sections each. This game will not have WoW's numbers even if it is incredibly good... XIV will be lucky to break 500k sustained subs over a long period if the game is awsome. Break that up too much and you have artificially created population issues. ( I Hope I am wrong with #s but this is the worst mmo ever made... that title will forever hurt it)

The latency we seen in Alpha is not bad at all, it is better then XI's... and the servers are all in JP. This is more proof regional segregation is completely pointless.

I don't see the big deal because the JPs often won't want to play with NAs because they don't speak the same language. If anything an all NA based server will give me more people to play with and not less, because everyone there will speak the same language and could play together.

I'm all for regional servers. I prefer playing on low latency servers since it updates my location to the server and the monster location on my client faster. It should make it easier to attack monsters that are running away from me with limited range weapons.

I rarely play with Japanese players anyways because of the time difference. It will separate the community initially, however with the influx of new players, new communities will form from our seeds.

Even so, they still play on the same servers, still contribute to the same economy, and still keep the servers from pretty much dying during certain times of the day.

And this isn't even just about JPs. What about the germans and french? I had some EU friends that I probably won't be seeing around because of a pointless fix for a non-issue.

Those who get seperated will remain that way, not just initially. More people doesn't mean that I can still play on a thriving international server that breaths 24/7 instead of a time-zone.

There's nothing stopping you from staying together. I believe SE already said you can choose any server by location. Get in contact with your friends and stay together.

Beyond that, if you don't specifically choose to move anywhere, you'll still be on the same server with the same friends you had before when the game launches.

Personally I'm hoping that the lockout period of migrating from your current server will show people that the servers location has little to no reall effect on the "Lag" we experienced in 1.0.

Unless you get hard on counting millesecond reaction times, playing on a Japanese server really isn't much different from a US server. The only real crowd I see being hardcore for their regions are the PVPers because otherwise they will blame everything on "Lag" and even then I bet I'll still hear people crying LAG! when they get killed in PVP.

If they do indeed have a lockout period I hope they would give us 1 free transfer after it is over and not charge us $25 if we want to move to like the US servers.

Assuming its $25 cause that is the FFXI price for server transfers.
