IMO just seems like a disaster to have lifetime subs, it just doesn't work, especially for this company. Remember they have to keep on pushing content, maintenance of servers, paying staff, etc. x~x Do people think money come out of no where?
It's really not possible for it to be a "disaster," because the number of people that are likely candidates to buy them is not very high. Please don't exaggerate.

MMORPGs make massive amounts of money provided they don't fall flat on their behinds, so a few people getting a good deal on subs doesn't really hurt them at all.

You are assuming that a great deal wouldn't. But I disagree. Also they would still be losing money by the few who have paid for lifetime subs and are dedicated players passed two years. Why would a company intentionally and deliberately put themselves into a position where they would be losing money in the long run? The extra months passed two years of gameplay of a lifetime sub adds up, especially with so many diehard ff fans, as seen with FF11, they can play an mmorpg for 7~8 years until they call it a day.
