I get that, but is that because of security to provide a better network?Xbox Live is an entirely closed and locked system, completely under control of Microsoft. It's policies deny any possible cross server gameplay with other networks and any gameplay that isn't directly controlled and policied by Microsoft itself.
Final Fantasy XI is an exception because it was released before the current policies were created.
Or competitive practices to shut out the competition from using their network?
