In fact he stepped down from Director to just Battle director, the same role he had in FFXI, so he wen't back into doing what he knows best.

Most of the old team is still in FFXIV lol they just have step down as main leaders for it but most of them still working on it.

I get the feeling that the shuffle was all about "cultural change" in the company, which you only get when you change most of the people hanging around the very top. To SE, this was all about changing their attitude to their playerbase and their game design process, not side-lining skill sets. And this gamble of Wada's seems to be paying off.
