No, actually it was changed because the players complained about it. That's why it has many more limitations now. Skills were like pokemon, gotta catch them all to make one good class. This made every class feel the same which was bad.

And Yoshi wanted class individuality himself, he thought it was hard to tell them apart as well. (Just saying it wasnt just players).
