It may have been accepted but who said it will be in SE's database come selection, it may not be there now even, just a flag saying he has already applied stopping him applying again, he will just not be included in the selection next time round.

Acknowledging receipt of an application is meaningless unless he gets in. I have had many job applications acknowledge receipt of them, but a lot less giving me an interview, this is no different.
