I wouldn't be so sure about this. There was a story posted on the lodestone a while back that alluded to anima going away (or changing). Also, the maps have totally changed, there isn't a TP crystal around every corner anymore. means some walkin will have to be done.

As cool as it would be to go back to a world where teleportation is very limited, how would you write that into the lore? Magical technology regressed? I'm all for far more limitations on teleportation anyway. I'm also impressed by DubstepNinja's signature. "Constant Surprises" by Little Dragon! My favourite Little Dragon song is "Place To Belong".

SE check out early WoW though.. The 1.0 before hamlet anima system was pretty lame to be stuck with 0 anima, but everyone expects you to have it ready for parties. Would prefer a flight network system (can aether lifestream theme it) with travel time.
Teleporting cuts a large amount of tedium out of your gaming experience. When you just want to get there and not waste time doing it, then shortcuts really help, but they are optional; you aren't forced to take them. Conversely, any time you think you're taking the transport system for granted as an esteemed adventurer with many options at hand, start a new character and you'll realise just how amazing expedient travel is.
I will agree though that it really should require you to visit the place before you can teleport or be teleported to it. Anything else is just far too easy and there's no sense of accomplishment whatsoever.
It also makes sense to offer improved transport options as rewards; the more effort put in, the easier it is to get around. Even with the FFXI Voidwatch system that some people have mentioned, the majority of locations you could teleport to had to be earned through content progression. They certainly weren't gifted to us.
In regards to Guasta_Ryets' comment regarding Eorzea's lore: It actually makes more sense if it's limited by several factors and not just a free-for-all where you're able to teleport anywhere, anytime, instantly and for hardly any effort. To a large degree, Square-Enix have to ignore lore in these matters since it goes directly against gameplay if they force you to run or ride everywhere. Since it never got explicitly detailed how the aethernet worked in v1, they can get away with retconning it for ARR...

I'd be OK with a system that only allows travel between crystals and not just from anywhere. Maybe require an Aetherite Pass or a small fee to do so? I understand that at end-game telephoning should be something possible, especially when you've been everywhere 500 times - but limiting it to people who actually earned that luxury would be far better than any new player to be able to do the same.
To me, teleporting in 1.0 seems to be a feature left over from beta testing that should have been re-worked or removed once everything was set in place. When we first started and there were no airships and no chocobos, I could see where having teleporting saved the gameplay a bit. But when a game is designed to incorporate lore and be immmersive, to see all the airships in the sky and ships at the docks and say "lol, i'm just going to magically appear on the other side of the ocean instead." That ruins the experience.
"There's a time when a man needs to fight, and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny is lost, that the ship has sailed, and that only a fool would continue. The truth is, I've always been a fool."
With an airship, outpost warp or Crag/Crystal warp, you could bypass the ferry ride.yep. waiting 15 minutes for the ferry only to miss it, then wait another 20 min to finally get on. then 15 mins on the ferry itself. a one hour process just to get somewhere to even *begin* to be productive. time of my life. can't wait to do it again.
sounds great, sign me up.
Also bear in mind that the ferry was great for people who enjoyed and/or provided for their character via fishing, so it's not like it was just "pointless time wasting". Even when not fishing, I found it perfect to take a t/o, hit the rest-room, get something to eat/drink, etc.
Of course, I wasn't the "go go go, run run run" type of player. I was punctual and where I needed to be when I needed to be there for group events. And even with XI's travel system, I never saw a problem with it. Just organize yourself accordingly.
I personally think XI's system was fine.
You start off with exactly as much "mobility" as you need - your two legs. By the time you're ready for a chocobo is when you'll be starting to do more traveling. That first trek to Jeuno is a milestone for every player. It's a challenge and a pretty scary trip, which makes successfully arriving all the more exciting and satisfying. Getting your chocobo is an awesome reward as you are able to instantly see the difference it makes. Your mobility is substantially increased.
Next up is the airship pass, which also comes at just about the right time as you're starting to travel between nations a lot more.
And of course, along the way you have your Crag crystals, outpost warps and staging points out in Aht Urghan. I know they've added even more since then. The point is, each of those has to be earned/unlocked before they can be used, and I think that's exactly the way it should be.
Anything that was of value or use to your character in XI required some effort and/or time to acquire, transportation included. I always enjoyed that aspect of it.
The only effort required is to unlock those things for the first time. After that, it's a matter of getting the teleport out there, or using whatever means are available. Transportation in XI was extremely flexible and efficient after a while.
I don't understand what issue people would have with that kind of a setup - unless they really just want everything handed to them for simply showing up.

Thats not very detailed lol - and Atomos sucking the aether from the crystals.. it could be changed without a retcon.
If they ever do plan on adding airship (sky expansion) I really hope aethergates gets bumped up to a end game reward or gets turned into a flight path system.
"Want to ride in my airship???"
"Nah, Ill wait for you at location - I'm going to flash there".
-_-;
