Unless I'm mistaken (and/or misunderstanding your concern), there's really nothing forced in joining a Free Company and thusly taking part in accommodations available to you. I'm thinking of it almost as a mini-LS/static group along the lines of a roommate situation.
Unfortunately the game is being setup so that you are almost being forced into this type of housing. There are many perks and benefits associated with FC Housing that are not otherwise available. Hopefully these perks will transfer to individual housing when implemented.
Hm... I think we may be looking at two different meanings of "forced" here. I'll agree that the perks of joining an FC would lead a player to want to be part of one, however I also believe that no one's holding a proverbial gun to our heads, either.
It's my understanding that the whole point of this setup is to further cement solid and long-standing relationships between players through said perks. In my experience with XI and XIV, reputation and accountability were both very heavily-encouraged concepts—your actions and behavior in parties stuck with your character for a long time, partly because multi-classing prevented making thirteen alts, so people learned who you were—so I'm wondering if this serves as yet another way to encourage making (positive) lasting impressions on your potential FC teammates by putting you in a situation where reputation and accountability come back into play...
tl;dr, If the perks of joining a Free Company are worth it enough to everyone involved, then they'd better learn to play nice or else we're turning this car around.
