That's exactly what the Echo is.

The Echo allows the user to dive into the usee's memories, and experience them firsthand as though they were happening right before the user's eyes; and, to an extent, you can interact with that person's memories and manipulate them, and they WILL have an effect on that person. But the changes of a memory only effect that single person and nobody else.

The Echo isn't so much time travel as it is diving into a person's subconscious to view their memories in real-time.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I haven't been keeping up with that side of the story really.

So yeah, no time travel has really occurred yet.

FFXI doesn't have an awful time travel story, no. But he said almost always.

No, you were able to interact with their memories NOT time travel

Welcome to the chamber of time!

Yes, you've been here for five years!

Use it once to get us to 2.0, but after that, never again. Time travel almost always leads to bad bad stories.
Gotta agree with this guy, though not necessarily with the bad stories part.

I realize that making whole new zones are harder(/more expensive) than taking a preexisting map and modifying it. But the maws and different dimensions are getting old. In the future, if they want to make an expansion, I would rather it be a completely new region than a recycled map.

Not only is the sense of exploration greater, but it makes the world as a whole seem larger.

Yup. But there are some people that realize what you did. Like that one Seedseer that gets pissed at you for using Echo on her.

Time travel is dopey, the Echo would be horrid, and time travel into the past would be even worse. Honestly, if they were going for the least cheesy and disappointing of hammered plot devices, I'll take the one they've given.

No, though some people might argue for Rip Van Winkle, which is widely considered a time-travel narrative. However, how does being "sent beyond the reach of time" equate to cryogenic sleep? It seems like you're handily conflating the two.

As far as what's been shown to us, the characters are moving between two different points in time, unaffected by time's passage relative to Eorzea. See time dilation.
