This is always the case, in both FFXI and XIV, in XI you cure the mob, in XIV, you get a message "cant cure the mob". Here the problem is you cant target yourself without remove the lock. The only way to do it fast is a macro for solo with "Cure <me>"

I think your problem is you deactivated the second target cursor.

People in my LS didn't start really using the 'Phoenix Down' company seal items until Ifrit (extreme) basically forced us to. With only one healer, you're lucky if you can get someone to cast a real raise on you at any point in the fight.
"Remedy" potions are something you should always have if they are applicable to you. For instance, as a healer, I -always- have echo drops. This is something I started doing in FFXI (where it was expected of you). Not many people carry these items in FFXIV, and I'm not sure why... =/ With Esuna having such an obnoxiously long cooldown, you really can't rely on a healer to take off all of your ailments, especially if you are afflicted by more than one.
Potions and mana pots are very important for a fight that drags on, or if you are trying to make up for a lack of gear with extra nukes. For instance, in a fight where you are really trying to 'beat the clock', your BLM will want to have mana pots on themselves for when they are out of MP after convert. Tanks and melee will want HP pots for the 'oh crap' moments that can occur, such as when a healer is dead/cc'd/dc'd, or other such delay in healing.

Of course. Did I ever mention how that was never sufficient?
Actually, you can't really cure your MP with THM, and Ethers are pretty useful for that, at least when levelling. I actually did Leves for levelling so sitting still for a while to wait for MP to recover was generally not a good idea, though it tended to work better when I was in a party.

I myself thought about doing Alchemist, since the items are so damned useful, but for some reason everyone says that they're useless. When did several hundred MP back in a second reduce resting time for mages be "useless"? I know that the items have what, a 3 minute cooldown? It won't help in Darnus (hard) since the 30 minute cooldown on Lunar Curtains (medicated status) is in effect since the beginning of the fight because that's when you pop it, but in other circumstances this stuff can be useful. Enmity+ potions for the tanks, enmity- for the DD/BLM if necessary. It just seems like there are a bunch of possibilities that aren't being utilized by the players.
Just curious to what happens to people with 5 players standing and no one has raise? we have alot of these items already just not named the same as back in the old days, but
all mega potions
all company tonics
all food excedra,
we got a good amount and are all very useful especially in the burning circle when half your party dies before they pull there weapons. I just wish the countdown would be adjusted a bit and or be able to carry more of the more useful ones like company tonic and scrolls for those of us that cant seem to stay alive very long.

I think if we do have these item already in game, having a short duration of effectiveness and a long wait time between using them again does make them more of a novelty than practical items to use in battle. I would like to see an Elixr or a mega potion that can be used in battle as needed, with maybe a 30 second wait time which would be much more practical than the several minutes many items have. Even a progress bar that needs to be filled before the item is used (similar to spell casting) wouldn't be so bad, as long as they could be used when needed.
"There's a time when a man needs to fight, and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny is lost, that the ship has sailed, and that only a fool would continue. The truth is, I've always been a fool."

XIV already has all these medicines, and much much more. ._.
(I use Giant's Drink to assist in MP recovery as a WHM.)
They're all useful in their own capacity, the cool-downs are there for balance.
XI potions weren't too useful outside of particular fights or removing status effects.
(Or self-inflicting poison.) Fields of Valor made temporary potions very popular. (Ballista too)
I love the company issue tonics! (phoenix downs)
Feels good to have 3-4 raises at my disposal.
Not to be rude, but holy cow if you haven't figured out how to select target while locked on. :O
It's a simple on-off switch in the in-game config menu, next to the macro tab option.
Something like:
"Do you want to be able to select targets for your actions while locked on?" Yes/ON or No/OFF.
Too little too late now, but it's there.
Also, if you use macros, use < st > over < t >.
(Edit: Ryuko: I also carry Echo Drops full time! High five XI Mage status!)
(Edit 2: "Holy Cow!" As in, wow that really sucks! Must've been frustrating.)
