if you care to much for digital items you take a game to seriously. what does it matter if it 6-9 mnths or 1-2 years if the bow is "required" people will get it or quit because of forced to get gear they can't get.
There is no meaningless time sink except in your opinion.
Again, If everyone could do everything and get everything without having to put any kind of commitment into it then new content would have to be released every few months to give people something to do.
I'm sure SE wants people to play and enjoy their game all the time. Not log on for a week and not come back for a month because everyone else on the server has to catch up.
Would you rather SE not release any new content until everyone on every server has completed every quest and has at least so many jobs at 50?
Except for this I agree with you. I don't mind if there's a huge dungeon that takes hours to complete, because at least you will be actively engaged in playing throughout those hours. There's a difference between crawling through a dungeon for several hours, or standing in one spot for hours waiting for a single nm to pop, 2-3 minutes to kill it, then AFK again for hours waiting for the next pop window.

I have a much more simple classification. I'm playing this game to be entertained, after all. Do I find the timesink I'm currently partipating in enjoyable or entertaining? If so, it's meaningful. If not, it's meaningless.there is a difference between meaningful and meaningless timesinks.
mmorpg ingeneral is a time sink.
meaningful time sink is leveling. It takes time to learn the game and your clas/classes/jobs. But everyone has access to this.
meaningless timesink a dungeon takes 6 hours to run through with a boss who require 12 hours to kill.
meaningful time sink- crafting
meaningless timesink- standing in 1 spot semi afk waiting for an nm to pop for 16 hours.
meaningful time sink chocobo quest.
meaningless timesink traveling for 4 hours trying to do a quest for 12 gil and a hat.
meaningless time sinks are ones where it limits the accessability of content from players. Which again skrews over others as they now can't join due to limited amount of people.
Well, i'm taking back my bow's example,
With 20 jobs
With 20 more slots to stuff
With stuff that himself will have slot (materias?) @.@
The "story" wouldn't finish after one bow, but would continue with neck, back, pants, shoes...
And why eveyrone would a the bow if he died what he had to to have it? (if someone understand that xD)
After, i don't ask that all stuff have to be obtainable with instance points, but it's somethin I like.
only you are taking it to the extreme dude. You assuming content even that takes less time so anyone can enjoy it is easy. you can have something for 10 min and it be hard... ever do bcnms? i wouldn't say those are east.... but they also are not time consuming. There is no meaningless time sink except in your opinion.

the less time you have to do something actually adds to the challenge. Like having 10 min to kill a dragon. and you love when times up.

There must be around 50 normal people for every nolifer who can/wants to play in a way that leaves little to no room for a balanced real life.
Whine all you want, at the end the credit cards of casuals weigh more than your need to attain in game what you lock yourself out from in real life.

This isn't even entirely about casual vs. hardcore. This game doesn't have enough players to survive right now. Any new content they add for lower level ranks will be there when the game relaunches in the future. This will make the leveling process more exciting for those players and they'll stick around for the higher ranks. Both casual and hardcore players will buy the game when it has its relaunch campaign, whatever that looks like, ps3 release, etc. THOSE players will benefit from what they add now regardless of the rank. In fact, they'll never see the end game content if that's all they add now. Clearly they need to add more end game content, but I think the handful of people with rank 50 classes right now aren't important in the grand scheme of things.

Anything repeatitive that's simply not fun in a game is a meaningless timesink.
Complex encounters that you repeat are not timesinks because they are fun. It's that simple. Waiting for hours for a pop or grinding the same rank and file mobs for hours are a timesink because the fun factor is zero.
It's funny how the more you post the more it seems that you're against *fun* in the game, in order to keep some virtual trinkets for yourself only. Elitism for for elitism's sake is truly appalling.

You bought the game for the experience, yes I agree.
But in most games there are the items or accomplishments that take a long time to achieve something to set a goal for yourself as a player. I'll give some examples golden chocobo in vii, unlocking the final weapons in x, certain achievements in the COD franchise. These things all take extra time and effort to obtain. Most casuals wanna play through the game and finish the storyline.
This is the same in an MMO, this is a game type that is meant to be played for more then 100 hours. Because there needs to be certain content that will fill players with those goals and that type of play time. Being a casual gamer in any game you have to know what you can and cannot accomplish. I am not saying all events and the content relating to them should not be available, but being this game caters to two crowds there needs a distinction in some of the content to appease both markets. So speaking in fairness which that word should not even exist imo, because there actually is no such thing anyways. The better word is compromise, because there is a balance for both types of players.
I understand everyone has their own lifestyle and things to do, and if your playing an MMO there should be content tailored to everyone, even if some of it discludes some players because they cannot invest the time. Its the same in life you can't do everything so you choose what you want to do and you chase that goal. MMO's are very much the same your character and by extension you the player has a set amount of time and you have to choose what you want to attain. Some challenges are harder some are easier.
Either way you the player has to make the educated choices, at least this is not wow or xi where your gear actually matters at this point anyways. Wear what you want, do the content already there, if you have an ls that will let you mage tank buffalo by all means its YOUR choice. have fun but don't take away from us who have different play stayle and attitudes.
BTW i have a job, family, friends, life, responsibilities, and a neckbeard, and I have realistic expectations of what i can achieve in any game I play.
