Put it in. Actually, it's not about "including" same-sex marriage in the game. The way they're implementing marriage, they're purposely locking out marriage for characters of the same sex. Which means they are taking a stance.

People here are looking into this way too much and they overrate the amount of attention the game gets. I understand that for some of you FF14 is pretty much all you do but seriously it's naive to think SE would upset outsiders by implementing marriage regardless of gender. This is no GTA. Granted nobody outside our circle of players will care about a fake marriage feature in fantasy video game.

It doesn't matter, allowing it would be condoning it in the eyes of someone who's against it. Players will most likely be free to use the chapel for their own personal uses, they can't really control what players do in that sense. But offering it as an option for GM-held weddings (Which most MMOs do, offer official support for a marriage ceremony for a fee.) would be the same as condoning it and could lead them into serious trouble. Saying "We'll let you craft variations of these garments and let you hold your own little party at xyz location." is different. That's how it worked in FFXI after all, you could craft garments that resembled the marriage attire and hold your own little ceremony but it wasn't officially recognized by SE unless you held plans for it and only for opposite-sex marriages.

EDIT: I've been up well past the time I should have been sleeping now reflecting on different stuff and the idea that 1.0 is actually over so I'm going to bow out of the thread here and get some rest. To those who really want this feature please do read up on my suggestion I made a few posts back and I wish you luck!

I refuse to eat at chick-fil-a! (not that I ever ate there before)

But yea, if that is the case, it's its more likely that SE would get the backlash from not allowing it at the start as opposed to allowing it.
A boycott was deserved since the company was found to be donating some of its money to anti-gay organizations. But the real fall out was all the employed people at the restaurants, some of them gay. In this economy, it wouldn't be easy for some of them to find new jobs. They're the ones that really ended up losing more than the CEO.

I would have to say that on a personal basis I don't care if it is implemented or not. However I know many people are/will throw temper tantrums regardless of how it is implemented or if they don't implement anything. For this reason, they should just add a ring that you can inscribe a name on and allow it to be given to another person. Call it a binding ring, whatever, just so that people who want it are satisfied and it saves their PR for allowing or not allowing "marriage". They'd have to use a vague word to remain neutral. Tera had rings like this that could be found called Friendship Ring and some other ones that were more meaningful but lacked being able to inscribe names.

However, if game marriages are allowed it would be weird anyways because guys play as girl characters and vice versa. So I can't really think of how they can add it to the game without doing some alienation unless they take an approach like I showed above.

That could very well work too. New crafting recipes for wedding related items, including rings, tuxes, and dresses of various style (with the addition of player added signatures could include wedding vows on them) would be a great alternative to GM sponsered weddings. All the recipes and gear should be lvl 1 too. No one could put it on SE if a male or female crafted an engagement ring and gave it to another of the same sex now can they..

Except if there's GM sanctioned weddings as well, in which case it's unequal treatment still if same-sex couples aren't allowed to use the services. Then it's like giving one kid a king sized snickers bar while giving the other kid one of those horrible smarties candies, while making him watch the other kid chow on said snickers bar.

Separate but equal has never been anything but equal. Either let everyone have equal access to marriages, or don't have them at all. And I don't know about you, but I'd much rather favor the situation where everyone gets candy, instead of nobody getting any.

lol, so if someone leaves their subscription because gay marriage isn't allowed is okay, but if they leave their subscription because they're against it and it is introduced, it is not okay? Nice double-standards right there!

True, if they cant GM sanction both, they should't GM sanction either of them, but they can still add in the crafted items, also maybe on a 1-time trade and unsellable basis, for Player-sponsored weddings. Tho, I think it would still be better if they GM sanctioned both types of weddings as well.

Funny thing is, I think the same sex marriages will be implemented 100% and this is just SE giving us a "heads up", preparing, letting people vent and accommodate to the idea, so that once it's in the game the players won't cause such a fuss, cause by that time we're all going to be like "Not this topic again on the forums, that's so 2012" :P

They already stated that they're considering it, and I'm pretty sure that they're aware that if they DO put a marriage mechanic into the game at all, not allowing same sex couples to get married will send a stronger message, than it would for allowing them (be it wrong or right, depending on your own personal stance).

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case at all. I do believe they are trying their best to get it implemented. They don't come off as homophobic or insensitive to me at all, just trying to tread carefully to please the masses.
