Adding to the chorus of NO here.

Honestly, having pop culture references in an MMO doesn't really bug me if they aren't too blatant.

I just think most of the pop culture dances people ask for look ridiculous, and I'll admit it, I generally don't like my characters to look ridiculous. I'm weird like that.

When I see requests like this I can't help but think, "oh, so THIS is why my character in [insert other MMO here] looks like a flailing goofball when I use a dance emote!" >.<

I like when the pop culture references are used on quest names and NPC dialogs, its nice to be able to relate to something we came across before instead of random quest names that people dont usually care about.

No. But if they were to add a non-original dance, I say give us Waltz to the Moon from FFVIII, we still don't have anything from VIII in FFXIV the 25th Anniversary of Final Fantasy Mash up Massively Multiplayer Online game.

All a pop culture reference is is a reference to popular culture.

What is pop culture when it becomes unpopular culture? Nothing.
What is pop culture when it is broadcast to another continent that does not share your culture? Nothing.

Implementing particlar visual features that relate back to pop culture also targets a particular audience.
If my character suddenly started sliding around on his knees like a 7 year old at a kid's birthday party then I'd feel ashamed. This would be targeted towards children who appreciate this kind of behavor.

This can be swapped around, too. If I suddenly had an animation of my character filling out his tax returns forms then this would turn off the minds of younger players.

Some games out there can get away with pop culture because of their particular target audience but one of the wonderful things about FF MMOs is that it appeals to a very wide range of players.

I'd also like to state on top of that that if my character suddenly started doing a pop culture dance then he wouldn't be the character that I want him to be. The silly little jig (which is hideous) works because regardless of what kind of character I want him to be it is commonly accepted to be a dance in Eorzea culture.

Although the Elezen male dance... on second thought, let's not go there.

When Gangnam Style trend is over and everyone finds it "has been" you'll regret that Square-Enix put it in the game.

Sure, why not? The pop-culture jokes are a huge part of WoW's popularity.

The only real problem it poses in a FF game, is that the game is being developed in Japan, so much of our pop-culture is, more than likely, a mystery to them. IIRC, FFXI had at least a bit of Japanese pop-culture reference that flew over the heads of most of us westerners.

You said the main term... "developed in Japan". Gangnam style is a Korean song. Kpop is not really that hip in Japan. Only like 2 female barely get street cred over there. pop-culture can come after the core gameplay experience is in full motion.

When it comes to Wow. Their pop-culture comes from all things developed in the usa.

Most of the english pop culture references are added by the loc team... the achievement names and such are different in the jp version. Either way, it doesnt matter how popular it is, gangnam style is f*%king stupid and has nothing to do with most players "fun". Btw the macarena was popular too but you still looked like a dumbass doing it.
