Sure, why not? The pop-culture jokes are a huge part of WoW's popularity.

The only real problem it poses in a FF game, is that the game is being developed in Japan, so much of our pop-culture is, more than likely, a mystery to them. IIRC, FFXI had at least a bit of Japanese pop-culture reference that flew over the heads of most of us westerners.

You said the main term... "developed in Japan". Gangnam style is a Korean song. Kpop is not really that hip in Japan. Only like 2 female barely get street cred over there. pop-culture can come after the core gameplay experience is in full motion.

When it comes to Wow. Their pop-culture comes from all things developed in the usa.

Yes Japan completely shields themselves from our western culture.

I vote a huge "NO" to pop culture dances. As others have said, SE can borrow from many of the great extant folk dances or make up some related to the different cultures in Eorzea.

Pop culture dances in fantasy MMOs are kind of funny, sure, but they can be very annoying. When I played WoW, I made a Human female character but deleted her for a number of reasons -- one being that her /dance was the gods-awful Macarena. It was embarrassing. I made a female Dranei instead, which was MUCH better. The /dance for female Dranei? Bellydancing. I think something like that would be fine in Eorzea (bear in mind, I may be biased because I am currently taking bellydance classes).

Also, if people really want a funny dance for comic relief, what about having a /sillydance or /funnydance? We'd still have /dance for a race-specific folk dance, and /sillydance could be something fun (NOT pop culture).
