Actually model variations cause more stress than if a lot of them are the same. So it could help with load and stress testing using large groups of players. The point isn't totally to preview all of the new things coming in 2.0. The point is to test and find bugs and to fix players to do things that would stress the game to see how it holds up. How is adding all these planned hair styles and such going to help that?

Model variations just add stress to the rendering done by your own video card.
The point of the Alpha is to test network/server stress.
Even if 99 models on the screen all have the same outfit, all that info still needs to be processed per-char and sent over the network..
In reality, they could have done the test just as effectively with everyone using the exact same DRG preset build.

While that is true, it's not at the point where you need that much variation in character models and equipment models in one place to stress the game, which by the way, is on client's side.
When has anyone tested an alpha and had every customization option open to them than in the final build? Never. Even 1.0 you had less options. 2.0 Alpha you are given 1.0 final build hair options. Naturally, it'll increase from there. How many options? Who knows.
However, I'd like to reiterate that you're not testing how pretty and unique your character looks. There are other things that are outlined. The only reason you're looking at the creator is because SE wants you to feel included. Like you're in on it. While others who are actually testing the alpha are doing whatever is outlined for them. While everyone is sitting here worrying if their Hyur will have an Elvis Quiff, more productive things are happening.
