I honestly don't understand why voice chat isn't built in to multiplayer games nowadays.

I think Yoshi P has a bit more of a global mindset than most other Japanese players, and so he knows what is available out there and wants to incorporate a lot of those things into FFXIV. It was also interesting to read that Yoshi P uses voice chat (as he mentioned in the link posted by Kaplan).

But Japanese players in general tend to be more private, and voice chat would probably be seen by many as an unwelcome intrusion on personal privacy.

For a game where a large percentage of the player base is Japanese, I agree with the first 3 points Yoshi P brought up as the cons of implementing voice chat.

    1. There will be times when voice chat will be mandatory for things like instanced raids.
    2. In particular, there is a fear that female gamers will get harassed when the say something and will then want to stay away.
    3. A gap will appear between those that have/don’t have a mic.
At least for those people who do want voice chat, there are options out there and SE doesn't seem to be against their use.

While not ideal for them, PS3 players who want voice chat may just need to prepare other means for it.

I hear you, but the truth is that as the game there are already many endgame shells that require voicechat for instanced raids. Plus i kind feel that its a little sexist of yoshi p to imply that woman cant handle the things said in an online game. Really as a man or woman you will be subjected to people who will be rude and say inappropriate things. Women are already playing with men in raids and using voice chat. Not having some form of voice chat for ps3 players will create a divide among ps3 and pc players instead of creating a divide between the haves and have nots in regards to a mike.

Um. Yes, there are a lot of English speaking shells that require it and it does make communication a lot more efficient than trying to type out instructions mid combat.

But that's the thing. When it becomes a requirement for participation, then that is when you start to see problems. And those problems would probably become very big problems among the Japanese player base, which is something Yoshi P needs to be mindful of.

    - Without built in voice chat, the divide between players is something that is being imposed by players on other players regarding something that is not part of FFXIV itself.

    - With built in voice chat, the divide becomes a an issue that SE would have instigated.

I'm not trying to argue against voice chat. I'm just pointing out some issues I see, especially on the cultural side... especially since I spend practically all of my in-game time with Japanese players and understand how things work socially.

I also think many women can put on a strong face when it comes to verbal abuse or harassment. But often, it still hurts even if we try not to let it. I'd just rather not deal with it in something I'm playing for fun.

PS3 has so low ram it probably can't run Vent and a game at the same time. Playing a mmo without some voice chat program puts you at a huge disadvantage. Another problem with PS3.

Not really a avid fan of Voice chat during raids (I listen in when I need to) But don't really talk much myself, I generally learn the plan ahead of time.

That said at there are a multitude of options for PS3 players to be on even ground with PC users. I'd just use a laptop to get into the chat and go from there, of course it's not a option for every single person. But I mean if your playing MMOs there is a good chance you have a computer floating around somewhere in your house (Or the means to buy a eco-craptastic laptop just for the chat you can find them for like $100.00 if you know where to look and aren't looking to use it for anything.)

It is alright everyone who plays on ps3 who also have a smart phone can download the Ventriloid or iPhone version there is Teamspeak and Skype also available for smart phones. So if you with to communicate with ls/company members you can just make sure you phone is plugged in and you are also welcome to use your blue-tooth headset that you normally would with ps3.

While it is sad sony doesn't support these apps there is still a possibility to communicate.
