if you have the code for one slot its just copy paste for the rest of em pretty much
Not sure im keen on the idea to be honest, i dont wanna see a whm in full heavy dark light and that kind of stuff.
A majority of endgame gear is unmeldable...You say you want to evaluate people in 30 seconds, you can't do that now since you will need to check what material someone has equipped anyway. Some people have triple/quadruple melded gear that far out does what you consider the best gear so you wouldn't be able to tell without checking anyway.
Also, If I see someone with a relic weapon, and wearing heavy Darklight gear but they happen to also be wearing Cobalt Mitt Gauntlets, I don't need to check them to know that those gauntlets are almost certainly 3x melded.
Still no point in arguing against a vanity system - it's apparently confirmed that we are going to get one, so we should just ask for a toggle. (I'm assuming the JP players are well ahead of us in asking for this, they generally seem to care more about authenticity in the game from the comments I've seen)

Sorry my bad english,
This feature sounds interesting at first, but I AM STRONGLY OPPOSING THIS.
Look at wow, maybe for nostalgia or cosplay reason,
there are so many player go back to the old dungeons everyday
solo & one-shot those mobs, grab the dated high-end gear, then walking around,
Because it's too easy to do this,
people can switch their gear appearance to almost any kind in a few seconds.
that make the gear appearance worthless,
make the old high end & some story based gear like a joke, have no soul.
Now in WOW,the only difference left is the attribute numbers:
1.Grab the new gear for more attribute number,
2.Change to the appearance you like.
3.Grab the next new gear for few more attribute numbers,
4.Change the appearance again.
Thats REALLY BORING
WOW is full cosplay shit now, not like a RPG anymore,
no more dream for high end gears.
the gear designers are lazy & don't care how bad the new gear looking.
because they know if they don't do it right, player will just use the old designs.
The problem in FF14 current version is,the spiritbonded gear are overpowering.
the status point are much(2x-3x) higher than non meldable gear.
What I thought is:
SE may give player an option to upgrade their existing gear.
& it should be not a easy task ( like the AF weapon quests,).
You need to defeat some bosses, grab some ores or stones to upgrade your favorite gear.
With the upgrading, the gear appearance may change a little (add some gold wires, add some metal pieces over it, color changes etc,)
And it can be a side-grading: I can grab a fire stone, then revamp my lightning wand to a fire wand etc.
You want to use your favorite old sword or armor to against the strong monsters?
fine, you need pay some efforts to enhance them, then you may have a even better one.
& because the changes of appearance characteristic ,people will know you have accomplished something.
this make sense IMHO

That's a pretty bad assumtion - that the art team would purposefully degrade their own work.
It's also not true that this makes it "less RPG" as character development does not always = better gear.
I am torn on this issue. On one hand I want to look at a character and see what they are really wearing instantly. On the other I would like people to be able to put together the outfit they want. I just hope it is all within reason. I want my whm to look like a white mage and my tank to look like a tank.
Today I can go on a run with my LS and instantly know who the tank for today is by just looking at them. If someone changes roles between runs I don't have to remember that so-and-so is now a blm and no longer the 2nd tank. In PUGs its even more important to know who is what job. In 2.0 this will be relieved somewhat by the new UI spelling it out for you but I guess I still would rather people look like their roles.
A toggle would be nice so I can see the reality and not the fiction of a vanity slot. I want to see what they are really wearing in PvP 100% of the time.
I guess it is all in how it is implemented...
A game that is not about getting better gear you can change "RPG" with "Fashion show" ^^
My vote for toogle: Yes!
I am sure I pay my subcription so I will want to see ppl wearing what they wear. I don't care about the need to check others, I do care to know that what my screen shows me is what the game is and no what others want me to think they are.
