Since a toggle button is highly unlikely, this is the best solution for it. At the end of the day, it shouldn't ruin your own experience with the game.
It is client side. The only thing server side is stats being sent to and from the server which vanity gear is simply taking the texture of another armor and slapping it ontop of something, something that's easily toggable.
The best way to explain this is if you turn your head or weapon display off other people will see you have it on or off, so it's well within possibilities of being a vanity on/off switch for your client since all it would have to do is check if they're using vanity and force the display of their real armor basically. It won't hurt game performance anymore than it does now to tell your client someone has their weapon mask on or off.
It prevents you from seeing it if you don't want to, that's the purpose.
No but I could make any item the way i want. If everyone here is so vane that they must force their illogical fashions - ill just one up it and modify the file * ( those saying no to toggle )
* just to be spiteful lol
And screenshots will go to hell unless they really limit the vanity system.

Then they wear it as normal gear, what then, oh mighty defender of the "Print Screen" button?
And no, dat editing shouldn't be discussed as a solution, not right with SE...

This is exactly it. While I don't think it's good for their image (vanity system).
A toggle button would be good enough.
It has NO effect on your experience if I toggle it on or not.
Why force your experience onto me when all I really ask is for me to maintain the original SE image that Yoshida wanted and you can live in your own world knowing no difference.
This thread has accomplished one thing for me: I used to look forward to a sort of vanity system, but now I'm beginning to shudder at the thought.
Ironically, it's the arguments of the people for a full vanity experience that have led to this.
I 100% look at Vanity Slots as a good thing. It is unfortunate that some don't feel the same, but it really shouldn't hinder their experience with the game. At the end of the day, it isn't a big deal. Even when they first said that they were not going to add the system, I shrugged and said "Ohh well" and forgot about it.
Now you see exactly why I'm "against" the things I am. It's not the systems in general, it's the people who are in favor of it.
I could honestly care less about the whole thing, I don't play dress up with my character. I'm just debating the point for the sake of it. :P
