So I would strain my time with my normal server and possibly loose other members of my linkshell(s) to the hardcore servers. Eventually have them rage quit because they lost all their progress on the other server. Not only that but the timesink they would go into by being on the death server. This would cause population problems and linkshells to fall apart. Specially if the grand majority of "hardcore" players in a linkshell prefer a death server over a normalone, then they decide to progress more on the death server than the regular. A battle of timesinks.

I would 100% support this. Would be a nice challenge. Just to make people more apt to try it, I would give users the option of doing a server jump after their character died instead of complete deletion.

Perma death is a bit harsh when so much mobs can OS you.
Maybe a "No return" and a timer for your character to be really dead after losing all hit points.

This way, you can still be raised by a spell or an item, but you need to be crazy prepared

Another idiotic thread with an idea that will never even see the darkness of night, let alone the light of day.

This game is not PvP-oriented. FF games, especially FFXI, have always been focused on the party orientation, and making the correct team and strategy to overcome a difficult obstacle. FFXIV will not be designed with open-world PvP in mind. And, it's a persistent MMO, not some cheap action like Diablo 3. Character progress can take quite a while - and right now, the leveling experience isn't fun and easy. It's repetitive and cheap.

Also, considering it's an MMORPG and not an action game, death is commonplace in multiple situations - boss battles, leveling as a lowbie, or just making a stupid mistake that can cost you a return and a decent portion of gear durability.

In order to have something like a D2 hardcore ladder, you'd need the game to be built and focused for PvP, and not PvE. Since FFXIV won't even have PvP at launch (i think that's confirmed, not going to dig up a source, deal with it) then there's no point in adding a feature like that. It's a waste of dev time, resources, and server space. They could use all of that time and effort towards a more fruitful endeavor, such as content that actually matters.

FF, in any title, will never be about PvP. Accept it, and move on.

Think of all the reasons why perma death was good in diablo 3. How short the game was, how simple it was, how many classes one character was capable of leveling, how few different paths were available. Final Fantasy XIV doesn't have any of those limitations and it kicks you into nightmare mode pretty quick. It's not a bad idea, sure some people might be interested, but it is ugly for ff14 and best left to games that are suited for it. Maybe enix will make a 4 player co-op final fantasy remake with the idea. That would no doubt work perfectly.

Keep in mind that this game cannot be calibrated for any single player, and the medium is not you.

I think the idea is fucking awesome and I'd be closely following the community's achievements even though I'd probably not play on it. I think it would be very exciting, though I don't think not being able to be raised would work. You would really have to master fights on normal servers first before you tried anything there and that would make challenges kind of pointless or not as much fun imo. Being able to raise others though, would incur some issues such as people being afraid of doing anything unless they have a raiser around, or people being really upset if they were the only ones who disconnected or simply couldn't get raised and lost their characters in their party while everyone else was saved.

So, in an FF-related MMO, where progress on a character (ala FFXI) will take months, or even years to fully complete.. you'd be cool with the idea of people losing all of that progress to permanent deletion because somebody thought that was a good idea?

It's never been done in a fully-blown MMO. And don't even begin to say that Diablo 3 is an MMO, because it isn't.
