Almost all MMOs have regional servers, including industry heavy hitter WoW, and nobody in those games bat an eyelash. It isn't even a concern. Not even a thought.

They would probably even think we are crazy for debating this topic the way we have been. Much like the jump issue.
The topic has been discussed for a million posts already.

1: we've been promised an international community since way before the launch of the game. Cultural diversity is a plus to many, and it was one of the element that made the Final Fantasy XI community one of the best in the MMORPG market.

2: global servers mean constant traffic at every hour. Local servers mean that playing at off times people find themselves in ghost towns.

3: Many of us have established contacts and friends from all regions (If i want to play only with Europeans, I'll walk out of the door with a soccer ball), and find that idea of splitting the current community, forcing people to chose between their friends in choosing to what regional server to go, is pretty much asinine.

The internet is a global affair, segregating people by region should be a thing of the past, and I'm rather appalled to see people (albeit an obvious minority) supporting it.

Hopefully SE will read and understand that the community doesn't want it.

You have forgotten an very important fact:

SE promised to fix the latency problem, and if its the only way they can do it, its sad cause you might have to choose between lagfree endgame or internationality but thats still your choice.

It's not like in other games where you cant go to anothers region server, you can still play where you want...

And there is a part of the community that wants it if its the only way to play the game without massive latency problems.

It's funny how the few people that support segregated servers seem unable to read and understand a simple concept. let me help you for the sake of clarity.

When you have friends from three different regions and those friends are suddenly split into three different servers, you can't "simply join to choose the server your friends are on", because many of your friends will go to the servers of their own region, forcing you to choose between them.

It isn't rocket science. Of course it's very convenient to ignore this not so little detail, since it invalidates the already weak pro-regional servers justification.

There is no magic way to please everyone here- this debate will rage on forever.
Of course. When you can't please everyone, you please the majority, and it's quite evident where the majority stands.

The addition of regional servers is by no means a holy grail of amazing goodness, but while it isn't a perfect solution, it does have its benefits.
They do not, when the netcode is decent. Regional servers are nothing else than a cop out.

You have forgotten a very important fact:

Latency is fixed by good netcode, not by segregating the servers. I'm from Europe, and play on US servers on basically every MMORPG that allows it. I have no appreciable lag, and my average ping of 100-110 on most games doesn't influence me in the least.

On TERA, that is probably the MMO that is impacted most by latency, i play on the US servers as well, and guess what? no problem at all. In Nexus, that has me complete against a whole server of other tanks for aggro, my rotations are still faster than most and I can hold aggro more consistently than anyone else in my server.

Why? Because they have implemented decent netcode in their game.

And there is a part of the community that wants it if its the only way to play the game without massive latency problems.
Looking at this thread, and at many threads before, that part of the community is a vast minority.

Global servers were a major publicized point for this game. Hopefully SE will withdraw this localized servers cop-out and go back to the right track, with a quality netcode that supports it.
