A large bulk of players are going to play GW2 until FFXIV is up and ready.

More like a bulk of players will be playing GW2 until 2.0 comes out five months later, they will try 2.0, and then they will go back to GW2 after being underwhelmed by the improvements. I won't be playing another MMO during the downtime because I don't want to get sucked into the trap.

I find this highly unlikely as GW2 will most likely be dead and forgotten by the time 2.0 is released.

I'm not even playing it but I know it had amazing sales at launch.

Anyway I hope they don't commit to a specific release date because you are demanding it but instead they should get it done this time before anyone gets to play it for reviews.

anyhow i don't really think GW2 will fail, or get "forgotten", but isn't nearly as good as they said it would be.

As did every new MMO the past few years, they all tapered off because it's just impossible to please everyone. SWTORs problems mostly fell into the fact it was a glorified multiplayer (if that) KOTOR and not so much an MMO for example. GW2 will likely taper off to Rift levels, rather than be completely forgotten it'll still be there with a stable playerbase but it is arenanet we're talking about. Once the honeymoon period is over we'll see what happens.

I am not going to play any other MMO during downtime, but... How is trying another game, finding out is better than FFXIV and deciding to leave for that new game considered a "trap"?...
