To put it simply, is a place where a large amount of information is stored. That can mean any data coming from the internet, data from offline, etc etc.

When were talk about the internet, the data Center can link to another data center of course all data has a center point. ( Center point being Japan location of FFXIV Servers), but when you connect to say NA data center (server) which is closest to me. I can still play with the people of Japan because that data center is linked to the data center in Japan.

That's how I understood Data Centers. Correct me if I'm wrong though, so I can understand it 100%.

Also, yes, Data Centers are basically "regional servers" but only in the sense you'll access the data from them rather than the Japanese servers.

It's mostly fear of not being able to play with friends if it was separating players (not the case), example the OP's fear, and hope of separating players that some other people always wanted.

I hope NO regional server. If you try to kill the game, yes SE, you're doing in the correct way.

Please grow up. Regional servers is actually a move many of us would appreciate, but that's not even what they're doing. Even so they already said there isn't going to be any restrictions on what realm you can roll on, so there'd be nothing stopping you from rolling on the same realm with all your friends.
