I work for AT&T, the largest telecommunications company in the world... And yes Datacenters do house servers but majority of the time it's just to improve latency or replication of data.
So I'm not sure who made you so un-informed on the topic of data centers.
anyhoo.. The severs will still remain cross-regional and cross-platform.. No the sky is not falling.![]()
:| So I know who to kill.
You're new to these forums, you haven't had the pleasure of seeing people take one thing and run wild with it, or maybe you did catch the grass threads. So I'm not sure who made you so un-informed on the topic of data centers.

LOL... I've lurked the forums since they opened the doors to them and was a part of the 2nd wave of Beta testers for original 1.0 launch. The BETA forums made me not want to register again... However 2 weeks ago I did and now I remember why I shouldn't have >_<

I also tought the term "data-center" is appropriate for what they will do.
But yeah, the new servers around the world will only be some kind of relays, and not separated servers.

Hmm im not saying you people are wrong and i think it would be quite technical but i have one query-
If these data centers are just like relays and the players are still multi region- i cant understand what difference sending data from say japan to a data center and then to my computer would make, surely the data would travel just as much distance if it went straight to my computer?
surely data has to come from a single server, i dont think two servers can for example tell ifrit to do eruptions at precicely the same time for example- as the AI does actions pretty randomly.

Alright, first of all, we will never know exactly how it works, but who cares, really... as long as it works.
IMO, it will be something like that. There will be 3 server. Something like "Balmung-EU", "Balmung-NA", "Balmung-JP". Those 3 servers will run the server software.
One thing I'm 99% sure, the JP server will still contain all character data.
So when you want to do something, like sell an item to the NPC, when you click the item, the "request" will go to the server closer to you, let's say "Balmung-NA". Instead of waiting a long time for the JP server to reply to you, the NA server will be able to reply right awan.
And then, once in a while, the NA server will most likely send updates to the JP server to tell what changed on your character.
Edit : The only thing we can be 100% sure is that everyone around the world will still play together as if nothing changed.

well for what its worth the impression i got was that the servers are going to be region specific but you can choose any server you want.
i never heard of what you people are talking about and if that was possible i think other games would have done it that way.

I'm not well-versed on servers and data centers, but is this even possible in an MMO? My reasoning is telling me that it can't.IMO, it will be something like that. There will be 3 server. Something like "Balmung-EU", "Balmung-NA", "Balmung-JP". Those 3 servers will run the server software.

Anything is possible.
Anything.
It is already kinda that way if you think about it. The server "Balmung" is not only one big computer. It is multiple computers talking together and exchanging data.
I'm sure it already happened to you when walking outside of Ul'dah. Some times you cross players with their names "greyed" out. These players are in a different zone (different computer) but still, the 2 computers/zones talk between themselves.
The only diffrence now is that there will be more computers and instead of being in the same building, they will be spread across the world in different data centers.
Sure, they didn't explain it to us that way, because we don't have to know that. But they never said we would play separated. Actually, I'm sure i have read mutliple times that the servers would stay "multi-region" or whatever you call it.
Edit : For your information, the biggest part of my job is managing and fixing network traffic in networks of over 2000 devices spread across multiple building/cities. While I'm not a game programmer, I understand how that kind of stuff works.
