Are there still gonna be worldwide servers?

With the confirmation that servers will be regional, I was left wondering if we are still gonna have worldwide servers at all. I would really hate to see them go. I don't wanna have to choose between my EU, NA and JP friends. Sure some of them will choose their own region's servers, but most of the ones I know personally would prefer to be in a worldwide server. It just would not seem right to me playing an FF MMO and not being able to group with people all over the world.

I hope SE has not forgotten the outcry from the server merge fiasco.

I thought he was just putting up 'servers'? So that people around the world wouldn't have lag issues or whatnot.

Unfortunately for the people who share your desire, SE is more interested in perspective players, and you seem to be the minority. They did say that they will allow you to choose which server you want to play on, but no word of a server specifically targeted for people who want to play with people from other regions yet, and to be honest this is obviously only my opinion, but I doubt they will have one.

However, and this is speculation, it may be possible to group (via dungeon finder) and communicate with people who are on your friends list regardless of region. I have no evidence to suggest that's what they're planning, but I have seen it done this way in other MMOs.

The worlds will all still be cross-region. They are introducing regional data-centers to help with the connections, but that is all. We will still play with the same diverse players, just without as much lag.

Think about it as if it were right now, but with a different location. If JP/EU players want to play in a server that is located in NA, they can. It's just giving the option to people to play in servers near them. Now, if this separates the vast majority of people, well that would just explain that most people prefer it than a server located only in Japan.

In the long run, this will most likely separate most regions. SE recognizes that more current and potential players would prefer servers near them than a forced global server located far away from them.

They're simply going to do what every other major MMO gaming company does and host servers in each region of their respective players...

What many others are saying, is that they will somehow help eliminate lag, while still allowing people from NA, EU and JP to connect

The data centers are to help with the lag problem, the servers are still cross region.
In the current build now, our gameplay relied on Japan's data centers causing lag, the creation of the data centers in all major areas remedies that.

I work for AT&T, the largest telecommunications company in the world... And yes Datacenters do house servers but majority of the time it's just to improve latency or replication of data.

So I'm not sure who made you so un-informed on the topic of data centers.
