Actually, he claimed in an interview that they were all using terminals connected to a server back in Japan. Could have been a mistranslation, but as far as we know, they were in fact playing on servers in Japan.

that's the thing, they left out half of what he said. There will be multiple datacenters, but whether that means regional servers or something else is unclear. How do they want to decide which server to place unto which datacenter? He also said to not think of this as him "building a wall", so there should be more to it imho
