I am learning a lot from this thread. I myself tend to assume that every female character is male until proven otherwise. Not that I have anything against it, but just from growing up playing different MMOs and always calling people by their ingame gender (he, her, etc.)

As I'm older now (22 years young) It's come to be irrelevant who's behind the screen as long as they are a good and fair person. I feel this is the best place to treat people by their attitude as opposed to their race or gender...

I really feel it does not matter anymore. Actually in FFXI and FFXIV gender has always been a joke. In FFXI a popular joke was that all Elvaans were male (on account of their lanky and masculine features)

In FFXIV it is the Manqo'te (read: Men who play female characters, not to be confused with a Male Miqo'te that is the offical race)

An example of a Manqo'te and the joke: http://gaias-nique.deviantart.com/#/d55ezd4

I am a female playing a female, but I still assume all players are male until I hear them on vent/teamspeak/skype lol

To me it does not matter in the least...I can usually tell the difference between a RL male and female though behind the character after all these years of playing MMO...but it does not matter what someones gender is..we are all here to play FFXIV and have fun right? ^^

I have had a ton of drama since playing MMO..even although I ignore it/avoid it. I am Cesil from the FFXIAH..and had a lot of nonsense of people insisting I am not who I am..(When I shared some cosplay photos of myself) until it got to the point where I got fed up and the admin suggested I do this: took a picture of me with a sign and in front of my PC screen with my character in the background lol. Most people are reluctant to believe a female plays games...it is strange. There are lots of girls who play! So I guess unfortunately to some people it does matter but meh..what can ya do lol.

The one thing though that does make me a bit sad is how Miqote are mostly seen as guys now...heh, even in FFXI I didn't see Mithra as a female race...I mostly saw them as men because of how many guys played them! Again, nothing wrong with it..haha just funny how that turned out. So yeah I am debating on which race to play in 2.0.

Edit: Oh..and I am the opposite haha I try to make my character look as much like my real self as possible ^^ But I imagine that is because I am a female and I see my character as me..if that makes sense at all...>.>

played a male in XI.... always hated how gear looked better on mithras compared to male humes
now im a cat girl in XIV and i don't think i could go back
i like the animations better and i like how 90% of the gear looks on my char

as far as building a char that looks like you.... any char i make always has something on it thats a feature i have or represents me in some way....

the only thing i hate is refering about ppl as He or She, because i think that 90% of the times im wrong on the RL sex of those players, but i can live with that, for myself i prefer playing the sex i am, once 2.0 is out i will make this Elf even uglier and fearful lol

I play a male lalafell and have no qualms when people call me a he. I don't say, "I'm a girl! D:<" Though my ls mates have corrected them ><....I'm thinking, "I play a male lalafell...plus this is the internet, of course they're gonna think I'm a dude." And I know a LOT of guys that play female characters, yet I have no issues with them.

Yeah I don't see the point in correcting people either...hehe what is the point? We are all just random folks on a game so it is no big deal ^^ I actually know quite a few of rl females who play male lalafell's simply because they are so cute!

To the OP and everyone who is agreeing with him. No, just no. Rigid gender roles must match your RL gender. In fact, after character creation a SE employee should show up at your house and physically verify that gender matching is present. Now some of you might be skeptical at the prospect of letting a complete stranger see what is under those undergarments, but don't worry, they can also just close their eyes and feel around a bit.

To the OP - its personal preference. A lot of guys that I know would rather play female toons than male toons because they want to look at the opposite sex when they play for 6-8 hours a day.
